Beachgoers may have noticed a kaleidoscopic array of vivid colors piercing the coastline in recent days. No, it's not a sunstroke-induced mirage, but rather the finishing touches on a months-long project by Santa Monica-based nonprofit Portraits of Hope.
The organization—founded in 1995 by brothers Ed and Bernie Massey—develops motivational projects that combine public art production with student civic education. The work also provides creative therapy for disabled children, who contribute to the art projects with specialized brushes.
The group's Summer of Color project harnessed the efforts of nearly 6,000 children in schools, hospitals and social service programs, along with more than 2,500 adult volunteers. The program culminated in the painting of the light-weight panels now installed on the walls and rooftops of local lifeguard towers through October.
Late last month, volunteers turned out in teams of 10 per tower to begin making over the washed-out structures from Zuma to Palos Verdes.
Only one Manhattan Beach tower remained unfinished as of Thursday afternoon.
