Celebrating Jerusalem Day With Poetry and Song
Congregation Tikvat Jacob observes the Israeli holiday with an evening of songs, and poetry by Israel's great modern poet Yehuda Amichai.
The sounds of singing and poetry reading rang through the halls of Congregation Tikvat Jacob in Manhattan Beach Tuesday night as temple faithful celebrated Jerusalem Day.
An Israeli national holiday, Jerusalem Day commemorates the reunification of the holy city in 1967 when Israel emerged victorious in the Six-Day War. Tuesday's program featured songs led by cantor David Berger and distinguished pianist Tali Tadmor. Besides singing, participants read aloud the poems of Yehuda Amichai, the poet laureate of Jerusalem.
"It really helped us reach out and remember the importance Jerusalem has in all of our lives," said Bob Horning, a poetry participant.
