Sea Hawks Soar; Best Mustangs 53-34

Redondo’s dominance in the paint provides the difference in a decisive victory over visiting Mira Costa.

The only thing better than good opportunities is more good opportunities.

Redondo Union High School's girls basketball team had plenty of both as the Sea Hawks pulled down 27 offensive rebounds to compensate for some difficulties shooting the ball, taking a 53-34 victory over Mira Costa despite shooting just 28 percent from the field.

"It was an ugly win," said Redondo head coach Marcelo Enriquez. "We missed a lot of opportunities and need to finish better, but our effort and intensity was great."

Redondo (9-8, 2-0) out-rebounded Mira Costa 50-28, finishing with almost as many offensive boards as the Mustangs' team total (27 to 28).

"Defensively, it’s the battle of the boards for us," said Sea Hawk Isabella Hall. "We like to compete against each other and it’s really the basis for offense and defense. It all starts on the glass."

Hall put together yet another double-digit rebounding performance, snaring 15 (nine offensive). Inara Nyingfa wasn't far behind, with 13 that gave her a double double to go along with her team-high 19 points.

"Bella was just hustling so much," said Enriquez. "She is inspirational for her teammates, the way she battles out there."

The Mustangs (9-10, 0-2) received a boost in the third quarter after trailing 27-14 to begin the half. Center Rachel Humphrey went to work inside, responding with three baskets coming in a four-minute span and cut the Sea Hawks’ lead from 15 to 10 at 30-20.

The Sea Hawks kept shooting balls at the glass and Brittany Stafford, who has been sidelined with a leg injury, came off the bench to gave the Mustangs fits inside, converting five offensive rebounds into 11 points.

Mira Costa's Camille Mills knocked down a three, but Stafford countered with an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:11 remaining in the third to keep the Mustangs at bay.

"Rebounds were a big factor in the game," said Mills. "We played hard, but just came up short in the end."

The Sea Hawks' height advantage became more noticeable as Humphrey was whistled for her fifth foul and forced to exit the game 11 seconds into the fourth quarter.

From that point, the Sea Hawks would go on a 14-4 run on the back of Nyingfa, who dominated inside with 10 fourth quarter points, helping to stretch the lead to as many as 20 before finishing with the 53-34 victory.

“I was getting good looks from my guards and I just wanted to focus on doing whatever needed to help my team—rebounds, blocks, steals, everything,” Nyingfa said.

Redondo was able to shake off a rough shooting night from season scoring leader Anne Park, whose four points came on 1-12 shooting.

"It’s good to see others stepping up when she doesn’t play her best," said Enriquez. "Bella, Brittany and Taylor have all been coming around on the offensive end and that’s what it’s going to take."

Shaylyn Austin, who connected on her first four shots of the night, was the only Mustang to finish in double figures, scoring 10 points.

"Their height really overpowered us," said Mira Costa head coach Miranda Biteler. "Our girls fought hard for them [rebounds], but they didn’t fall our way."

Mira Costa also lost to both Peninsula and West, two teams who hadn’t beaten Mira Costa in over 10 years. And they didn’t just beat Mira Costa by a little, they spanked Mira Costa by 20 or more points. This is absolutely, without a doubt the least talented and worst coached Mira Costa team of the decade. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to beat anybody in league other than Leuzinger this season.

They have the talent. They're just not being used properly in the game!

They have some talent. They just don’t have the standout players like they’ve had in the past: Karros, Richardson, Johnson, Rutledge, Nakamine. This is the first season in a long time that Mira Costa is without a star player that can carry the team on her back and will the team to victory. However, they could be like the team Redondo had success with last season, where the talent was more equally divided amongst its players. Hopefully, Mira Costa’s new coach will take a page out of Redondo's playbook and find success as well. Good luck, Mustangs!

Martin, you were right on the money. The first half of the Bay league season is done and the only team Mira Costa could beat was Leuzinger. They lost to Palos Verdes who had NEVER EVER beaten Mira Costa before last night. The Mira Costa girls basketball team is so pathetic this year that even the Manhattan Beach Patch doesn't report on them anymore. Instead the Patch just links us to sports news in the Daily Breeze.

The team has talent. It's unfortunate that the coaching staff cant put it together. When the administration took a different direction for the program with a coach who has absolutely no coaching experience, a trying season was inevitable. Make no mistake that it's the girls suffering the most with this staff and insensitive comments by those that don't realize how bad the girls can look with an inexperienced coach. If you are frustrated as a fan, speak up to the School administration and staff.

Why don’t you just stop already! Your boyfriend was fired, your daughter is transferring to Bishop Montgomery, and you’re still trying to cause an uprising at Mira Costa. It’s not going to get your boyfriend’s coaching job back, so go be a thorn in the side of Bishop Montgomery’s coach and school administrators. Goodbye and good riddance!

I think a lot of the problems stem from principal Ben dale hiring a coach that has absolutely no experience and it is showing. The team has some talented players that will leave the program if changes are not made with the coaching staff. It is really unfortunate

They're already planning to leave to follow the fired Mira Costa coach. He is going to get them into Bishop Montgomery where his girlfriend's daughter is transferring. As much as Mira Costa sucks this year, they're REALLY going to suck next year!

Dear Costa Parent, I will always support the girls of the program. You are insane if you think I want Coach Craig to return. Atleast I can use my name in these posts... Which is more than I can say for your cowardly comments. Keep the posts about the program. Nobody wants to read about what you think of me.

You are all missing the point. The program can be saved and there are a number of qualified local coaches that are available. One of the finalists for the job was John Sload who was in the bench the first game. He is a great coach who the girls really liked. He is still available and I am sure would and could help immediately.
