Flowers, records and mementos were left on the late singer's Walk of Fame star on Hollywood Boulevard Thursday.
By late Thursday afternoon, Donna Summer's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame had amassed a variety of mementos left by fans following the announcement of her death in Florida. The Hollywood Historic Trust had placed a wreath filled with pink roses, yellow orchids, snapdragons and Queen Anne's lace. Fans had left handwritten messages, candles and a sparkling tiara on the star. (One guy passing by threw his cigarette butt, which landed on the star's name while I was there snapping photos. Oh, Hollywood.) A couple TV reporters were stationed in front of the star for the early evening broadcasts. News vans were parked close by in a line. Summer's star is located in front of 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, adjacent to the Roosevelt Hotel. She was …

News on Coachella 2013 could be coming soon. Festival organizers posted a photo on the official website and Facebook page around 11 a.m. Friday that simply says "Monday 10 a.m. PDT." Both are accompanied by the message, "PSSSSST....... PASS IT ON." No other details have been provided. An email to Coachella organizers instructed to "Please check coachella.com on monday may 14th 10am pdt." and advised "Do NOT buy from a 3rd party/scalper." Followers of the festival are abuzz on Facebook, questioning whether this could be a pre-sale. Puttin On Productions mounts the teen musical opening tonight at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.
Local teens are getting a chance to strut their stuff in a new production of the stage musical Footloose, produced by theatre company Puttin On Productions. The show opens tonight for a five-show run over the weekend. According to company executive director Julia Mirkovich, the cast is made up of 25 teens between the ages of 14 and 20 years old. "You watch them, I can't believe they're teen agers," Mirkovich said about the cast. She picked the show not only as a crowd-pleaser, but also because it was something the kids are familiar with. "Most of the shows we pick, the kids don't know," Mirkovich said. "But we do a few shows that they're familiar with." That being said, if it hadn't been for last year's re-make of the 1984 film starring …

Students and staff rehearse the 1964 Broadway hit, "Fiddler on the Roof," before this Friday's opening.
The Mira Costa High School drama department is putting the final touches on "Fiddler on the Roof," a classic musical set in 1905 Russia. Around 130 students are committed to the play about a Jewish community coping with traditions and eviction. "Its messages, themes and music are still contemporary even to what's happening in our world today," said director and drama instructor Carol Mathews. "Fiddler on the Roof" features lively numbers, bottle-balancing and plenty of other surprises. The musical opens this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Mira Costa High School Auditorium, with other performances scheduled for April 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee is also scheduled for April 28 at 2:30 p.m.

The British passenger liner struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage 100 years ago.
On April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. The British passenger liner, which was carrying more than 2,000 people, sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912. Only about 700 people survived after being pulled from lifeboats. Here are 10 facts about the Titanic: 1. The Titanic was nearly three football fields long and one football field wide. 2. From its bottom—or hull—to the top of its smokestacks, the Titanic was 175-feet tall, which is about as tall as a 17-story building. 3. There were some 2,200 people onboard when the Titanic set sail. The ship could carry 3,547 people. 4. It cost $4,350 for one of the Titanic's suites on its maiden voyage…

John Bushman shows the Cultural Arts Commission a sketch of the marble bench he wants to make in memory of his parents, longtime Manhattan beach residents, and place on The Strand at 15th Street.
MB resident John Bushman wants to make a bench in memory of his parents, longtime Manhattan Beach residents, and install it on The Strand at 15th Street. On Tuesday night, he presented a sketch of the ornate marble bench he would like to install to three members of the five-member Cultural Arts Commission at a regular meeting of the commission. Bushman was asked to return to the commission with a more detailed and specific plan for his bench, and given the reminder that even if the bench meets city specifications, its installation on The Strand could be denied for aesthetic reasons. He was also told that memorial benches are no longer allowed; merely the name of the family can be placed on the bench. The commission said that there is a …

The travelling film festival makes a stop at the Hermosa Beach Community Center tonight.
LUNAFEST, a festival of short films by, for and about women, is making its annual stop at the Hermosa Beach Community Center tonight with eight short films from around the world. The festival is sponsored by Luna Bars and hosted by different charitable groups around the country. Soroptimist International of Manhattan Beach has hosted the local festival for six years now. "One of the members stumbled onto this festival," said Monica Frey, the club member in charge of the festival. She explained that since the Soroptimist mission is to raise funds and awareness of women's issues, the festival fit in neatly with the group's goals. This year, in addition to the films chosen by the LUNAFEST committee, a 14-minute version of Flesh: Bought and …
