Beach Cities residents are invited to attend the Walking Moai Sign-Up event and raffle Sunday at St. Cross By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach. Part of the Blue Zone Project’s Vitality City initiative, the event is part of a community-wide well-being initiative that aims to create happier, healthier and more productive citizens in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, according to organizers. To date, the Walking Moai program has had more than 1,450 participants, according to organizers. The term "Moai” means “meeting for a common purpose” and comes from Japanese Okinawan culture, where at 5 years of age, children are put into groups with four or five other children. A 44-state investigation into the Manhattan Beach based global footwear company takes issue with claims made about the shoemaker's Shape-ups, Tone-ups, Skechers Resistance Runner, and Shape-ups Toners.
Shoemaker Skechers USA agreed to pay $40 million to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit over health claims it made regarding toning footwear, the agency announced today. The consumer lawsuit claimed "toning" footwear known as Shape-ups, Tone-ups, Skechers Resistance Runner, and Shape-ups Toners toning shoes were falsely advertised to improve posture, promote weight loss, strengthen the back, improve blood circulation, promote sleep, reduce stress, reduce physical stress on knees, legs and ankle joints, and burn calories. The settlement was reached in conjunction with the Federal Trade Commission and 44 states and the District of Columbia. Southern California Gas Co. warned its customers Monday about a scam in which the culprits tell victims they can get credits on their utility bills if they provide information such as a Social Security number. According to the gas company, scammers have visited customers in person, used social media sites and even sent text messages to victims claiming that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. Officials of Southern California Gas Co. said workers for the utility always carry proper identification when visiting customers, and they do not randomly call or text customers asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information. Manhattan Beach Patch happened upon a La Mirada couple who were recently in Manhattan Beach to shoot their engagement photos.
These days, it's fairly easy to find online postings of engagement shoots and weddings photos taken in Manhattan Beach. With its surf, sand and sea and lots of picturesque spots, photographers and their subjects tend to migrate to MB. Manhattan Beach Patch happened upon an engagement photo shoot in MB for Michael Orozco, 25, and Valerie Martinez, 24, of La Mirada. The couple was being photographed by MB resident Sir Joel Harrison, as he likes to be called.

Manhattan Beach resident George Butts has once again put his emergency preparedness skills to work, using his knowledge and connections to co-host and produce a series of online radio shows on disaster preparedness. The "Preparing for Disaster in the South Bay" series of online radio shows on Blog Talk Radio aired Fridays at 7 a.m. The first program aired on Friday, April 6; the last on Friday, May 4. The series is available online. Butts, who is president of the Manhattan Beach Community Emergency Response Team Association, joined Joe Terry and CERT graduate Jackie Balestra to discuss disaster preparedness with experts. After rumors for several years that it would be getting into the cloud-computing business, tech giant Google finally launched its Google Drive last week, prompting all kinds of cloud storage and application providers to come out with announcements of their own, not wanting to be lost in the fog. Microsoft even managed to make an announcement a day ahead of Google about "improvements" to its SkyDrive service that actually amounted to a cut in the amount of storage space offered free to new users, from 25 GB down to 7 GB—still more than Google's 5 GB, but a cut nonetheless. I am in the sand section between Rosecrans and Marine. My neighbors across the street are on a different transformer than I am. My lights went out for a very short time (just enough to mess up everything digital in the house), but were on within minutes.
