The 28 members of Leadership Manhattan Beach's current class graduate Thursday after successfully completing their sustainable garden project at the corner of 15th Street and Valley Drive.
The 20th Leadership Manhattan Beach class delivered its project, a sustainable garden, to the public last weekend. Tonight, during a dinner ceremony at the Neptunian Woman's Club, they graduate. The 28-member Class of 2012 generated nearly $40,000 in direct-dollar and in-kind sponsorships to cover the cost of creating a new sustainable garden on city property at the corner of 15th Street and Valley drive. "It was an opportunity to step outside myself to learn new skill sets," said 2012 LMB class member Cynthia McMaster. "I changed a lot with how I deal with people," she said of being a member of an LMB class. LMB, which held its first class in 1992, writes on its website, "For us, leadership is not holding an organizational position, it is…
A bill by state Assemblywoman Betsy Butler that would create Veterans' Courts throughout the state passes the Assembly and moves onto the state Senate.
A state Assembly bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-Los Angeles) that would create Veterans' Courts throughout the state passed the Assembly on Thursday and will head to the state Senate for consideration. "Our current court and corrections system is not equipped to address the unique needs of veterans struggling because it lacks rehabilitation services and fails to address the underlying issues that specific to the traumas of military service,” Butler said in a statement. “AB 2611 provides that those individuals who have honorably served our country get the assistance they need and deserve." The proposed Veterans' Court would be modeled after the drug courts to assist veterans dealing with addiction, mental health issues and …

If passed, the patient-protection plan would ban teens from undergoing so-called ex-gay or conversion therapy.
A plan to ban a so-called conversion therapy that aims to make gay people straight has moved one step closer to a full vote by the State Senate. The patient-protection plan presented by State Sen. Ted W. Lieu, whose district includes Manhattan Beach, was approved by a policy committee last week. “Some therapists are taking advantage of vulnerable people by pushing dangerous sexual orientation-change efforts,” Lieu said to the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to a statement. “These non-scientific efforts have led in some cases to patients later committing suicide, as well as severe mental and physical anguish.” If passed, SB 1172 would ban children under 18-years-old from undergoing what has been described by more than 480,000 medical…
The scammers claim that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills.
Southern California Gas Co. warned its customers Monday about a scam in which the culprits tell victims they can get credits on their utility bills if they provide information such as a Social Security number. According to the gas company, scammers have visited customers in person, used social media sites and even sent text messages to victims claiming that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. Officials of Southern California Gas Co. said workers for the utility always carry proper identification when visiting customers, and they do not randomly call or text customers asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information. Customers should verify a person's employment before …
To make up for the state's $16 million budget shortfall, Governor Jerry Brown proposes steep budget cuts.
Gov. Jerry Brown proposed steep cuts across a variety of programs Monday to close a nearly $16 billion state budget deficit, but Los Angeles Unified School District and university officials said the impact on their budgets will remain unknown until November, when voters weigh in on proposed tax hikes. "We're going to have to cut deeper," the Democratic governor said in Sacramento while releasing his budget revision. "But cutting alone really doesn't do it," Brown said. "That's why I'm linking these serious budget reductions -- real increased austerity -- with a plea to the voters: Please increase taxes temporarily on the most affluent and everyone else with a quarter of a cent sales tax." Brown said the state's budget deficit has ballooned…
Before sunset, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun, casting a giant shadow across the land.
A solar eclipse is expected to be visible across much of the western U.S. on Sunday, and Griffith Observatory is planning a public viewing. In the hours before sunset on Sunday, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun – the eclipse will be between 5:24 p.m. and 7:42 p.m. The last solar eclipse visible in the U.S. was in 1994. In Los Angeles, Sunday's eclipse is the most extensive since 1992, according to the observatory. The Griffith Observatory's telescope will be outfitted with special filters, and viewing-glasses will be available for purchase. NASA warns that people should never observe a solar eclipse with the naked eye, only through filtered telescopes and special glasses. To learn more about the eclipse, visit NASA's website.

State parks division would absorb boating agency.
Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed eliminating the Department of Boating and Waterways, which provides grants for boating law enforcement, marina construction and abandoned vessel removal. In an effort to cut costs, Gov. Brown wants to reduce the number of state agencies from 12 to 10, including integrating DBW as a division of the Department of Parks and Recreation, rather than a standalone agency. The proposal is currently under review by the Little Hoover Commission, an independent state oversight organization that seeks ways to promote government efficiency. “There will be a loss of transparency, a loss of accountability, leadership and boating programs in the future,” said Anne Sacks, former president of the Recreational Boaters of …

President is fundraising in Los Angeles and will travel to actor George Clooney's home in Studio City.
Obama is scheduled to land at Los Angeles International Airport at 6:25 p.m. He is expected to travel by helicopter and motorcade to George Clooney's home in the Fryman Canyon neighborhood in Studio City, although his exact route is not being released. Obama is scheduled to attend an evening fundraiser at Clooney's home. Studio City residents and commuters who travel through that area are advised to expect traffic delays. Traffic delays could happen on Ventura Boulevard and Laurel Canyon Boulevard north of Ventura Boulevard, Krekorian said, due to road closures and tight security in the hills. A planned protest by members of Campaign for a Fair Settlement outside the fundraiser could further snarl traffic. The group plans to call on Obama …

Please, no hating in response. Just wondering out loud. BTW, if something will truly be a help, then I'm for it. If it is not actually helpful but harmful on the whole, then I am not. That goes across the board, medical or non-medical issues et al.   more ›
