Banner Has Beachcombers Discussing Hookers on Local Piers

PETA sent the message to encourage cities to ban fishing off local piers. But can you blame some if they read it the other way?

When People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals takes to the skies above the Los Angeles coastline with the message “Keep hookers off the pier,” there was bound to be a little fun to be had on social media.

Sending a pilot pulling a banner that said as much, PETA was referring to fishermen, especially in light of a shark attack earlier this month, during which a long-distance swimmer crossed paths with a juvenile great white hooked on a fisherman's line.

PETA was hoping the message would encourtage the Manhattan Beach City Council and other beach cities to pursue a ban of fishing off local piers. In response to the shark attack, the city of Manhattan Beach approved an emergency permit, banning pier fishing until Sept. 7. PETA wants to make it permanent, and for other cities to follow suit.

But a few in social media want to keep the hookers ON local piers, and we’re not so sure they’re talking about fishing. At all.

“They misspelled ‘on,’” tweeted one person.

“[A]re these hookers banned because they are wearing fishnets? ;-)” says another Tweet.
