Since about 6 p.m. Friday evening, seven people have died in six separate accidents, including one pedestrian. The fatal collisions took place over a wide area that included Santa Fe Springs, Willowbrook, Azusa, West Covina, Torrance and Nuevo in Riverside County.
Perhaps the most tragic crash took place about 6 o'clock, Friday evening, in Santa Fe Springs. That accident on Los Nietos Road, just east of Norwalk Boulevard, claimed the lives of two young brothers, 13-year-old Jonathan Medina and 11-year-old Damian Medina.
The collision with a power pole was so violent it sliced the family's Honda Civic in half. The accident also sent the boys' father to the hospital in critical condition. Police are now searching for another driver who may have cut off the Medina family car and caused the crash.
Additional patrols have been added today in El Monte, Monrovia, Sierra Madre, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Long Beach, San Gabriel and Whittier.
Sobriety checkpoints are also scheduled in Azusa, Huntington Park, Inglewood, Redondo Beach, Signal Hill and Altadena.
On Sunday, extra units will be patrolling the cities of Gardena, Hawthorne,
Inglewood, Torrance, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Huntington Park, Long Beach, Signal Hill and Vernon.
