Local Lifeguard Gets Bragging Rights for Life in Upset Ironman Win: Six-time American Ironman champion Matt Nunnally of Monmouth County, N.J. said goodbye to his title as Manhattan Beach native and resident Jeff Lombardo upset him to win the American Ironman Open division at the 44th annual Nautica United States Lifesaving Association National Lifeguard Championships Saturday in Manhattan Beach.

MBPD Officer Promoted to Captain: After close to a year as acting captain in the Manhattan Beach Police Department, Tim Hageman was officially promoted to captain Tuesday, said City Manager David Carmany.

City Council Votes to Possibly Censure Mayor Bobko: In a 3-2 vote Tuesday night, the Hermosa Beach City Council directed staff to draft a resolution censuring Mayor Patrick "Kit" Bobko for violating a city code of ethics when he declined to apologize to the city manager and public for circumventing protocol and undermining the city manager.

Six Plan to Run for Three Open City Council Seats: To date, six candidates have pulled and filed papers to run for one of three City Council seats in the November election. Non-incumbent candidates are Carolyn J. Petty, Nanette Barragan, Gregory J. Savelli, John L. Bowler and current City Council members Jeff Duclos and Patrick "Kit" Bobko. Councilman Howard Fishman said he will not seek re-election.

City Council Denies Car Wash Appeal: An auto spa will replace the demolished car wash at 617 Torrance Blvd., the Redondo Beach City Council decided Tuesday night. The controversial car wash was the centerpiece of a six-hour public hearing that ended with a 4-1 vote in favor of denying an appeal of the Planning Commission's approval of the project.

RBPD Pays Beverly Hills Police $25K for Work in Galleria Stabbing Case: The Redondo Beach City Council on Aug. 6 authorized a payment of $26,975 from the Redondo Beach Police Department's asset forfeiture fund to the Beverly Hills Police Department's Westside High Tech Task Force for assistance with the investigation into the Dec. 30, 2012 stabbing of two teens at the South Bay Galleria.

Redondo Police Officer Promoted to Sergeant: The Redondo Beach Police Department has a new sergeant as Officer Alan Beck was recently promoted, the department said last week in a news release. Beck, a 20-year veteran of law enforcement, initially worked with the Pasadena Police Department before he was hired by the RBPD in 1997.

Supervisors Renew $10 Reward in Attorney's Slaying: The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday renewed a $10,000 reward in connection with the shooting death an attorney in Rolling Hills Estates in 2009. Supervisor Don Knabe, who represents the Palos Verdes Peninsula as part of his Fourth District, recommended extending a the reward for information leading to whoever killed Jeffrey Tidus, a Redondo Beach business owner who was shot in the driveway of his Rolling Hills Estates home on Dec. 7, 2009.

PVDN, Hawthorne Intersection to Be Closed This Weekend: The intersection of Palos Verdes Drive North and Hawthorne Boulevard will be closed to through traffic this weekend as part of the ongoing bike lane project, according to a notice from the city of Rolling Hills Estates.

Purple Sea Urchins Invading Sea Floor Off Palos Verdes: Golf ball sized purple sea urchins have taken a swath of the sea floor off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, devouring giant kelp and forcing other marine life elsewhere, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. Popular Stories The pincushion-like creatures have prevented a revival of the kelp forest off the Peninsula, and to combat the menace, scientists and divers will kill an estimated 4.8 million sea urchins over the next five years.
