Weekend: The Jimmy and Gardening

Who says summer is over? We've got a sustainable gardening class, awesome surf fiesta, food fest on a pier, triathlon on the beach and more!

Where and when: 1236 N. Peck Ave., Manhattan Beach; Saturday, 10 a.m.

Why go: Come to the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden for a free weekly class to brush up on your sustainable gardening skills. This week is all about composting!

2ND ANNUAL TASTE OF THE PIER

Where and when: Redondo Beach Pier, 100 Fishermans Wharf, Redondo Beach; Saturday – Sunday, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy a lovely Saturday on the Pier and enjoy tasty bites from local restaurants, as well as strolling entertainers and live jazz and blues from KJAZZ 88.1 FM.

Price: Free admittance; tasting tickets are $1 each.

HONEY ISLAND SWAMP BAND

Where and when: Saint Rocke, 142 Pacific Coast Hwy., Hermosa Beach; Saturday, 8 p.m.

Why go: It’s Saturday night! Head over to Saint Rocke and delight in some live music from this Southern rock/roots/jazz hybrid band. They’re sure to get your feet moving!

Price: $10

2011 JIMMY SURF FIESTA

Where and when: 40th St., Manhattan Beach; Sunday, 7 a.m.

Why go: This unique team surf event supports the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation and is staged for f-u-n and friendly competition. Teams consist of one member from each skill level, and beginners are encouraged to participate. Entrants rate themselves and the committee then assembles teams at its discretion. Team are announced at the event and surfboards are available for use. If you don't want to surf, just come out to watch this spirited fundraising activity on the sands of Manhattan Beach.

Price: $40 through Oct. 7 and $50 after Oct. 7 to participate. Fee includes contest entry, T-shirt, breakfast, lunch and dinner (at Sangria) and possibly other promotional items from local sponsors. Free to observe. 

‘DAY AT THE BEACH' TRIATHLON

Where and when: Hermosa Beach Pier, 1 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach; Sunday, 7 a.m.

Why go: For those who have ever dreamed about trying a triathlon, here’s your chance! “A Day at the Beach” features a fun, safe, beginner-oriented course. Go ahead and see if you’ve got what it takes!

Price: $185 to participate; free to observe.

2ND SUNDAY DRUM CIRCLE

Where and when: Torrance Beach, 402 Paseo de la Playa, Redondo Beach; Sunday, 1 p.m.

Why go: We don’t want to work, we just want to bang on the drum all day! Head down to the beach and partake in this monthly drum circle. Drum and percussion instruments are available to share or bring your own! All ages welcome.

Price: Free
