Beach Cities Weekend: Games, Concerts and a Fiesta

Volleyball players and players of Wii will gather for competitions as local music series come to an end this Labor Day weekend.

Some of the best beach volleyball and Wii game players compete for state and national titles this Labor Day weekend, and the free concert series in Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach host their last shows. Plus, Hermosa prepares for a Fiesta.

Here are some ways to celebrate the last days of summer in the Beach Cities: 

Beach volleyball

The annual California Cup State Championship kicks off Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Tournament matchups, hosted by the California Beach Volleyball Association, will begin at 9 a.m. with men's and women's A, AA, B, Open and Unrated divisions. The boy's and girl's divisions compete Sunday, along with coed teams in A, Open and Unrated divisions.

Ninety teams of America's best Wii players are flocking to Redondo Beach Marina this weekend to determine who can advance the farthest in Mario Kart Wii or hula hoop the best in Wii Sports Resort. The Summer 2010 Wii Games national championship runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The games and additional activities are open to the public. A shuttle service will run every 25 minutes from parking locations at Redondo Union High School and the Knob Hill Community Center to take Wii-lovers to the pier.

Fiesta Hermosa

One of the South Bay's most popular end-of-summer celebrations kicks off Saturday in downtown Hermosa Beach—Fiesta Hermosa. More than 270 artists, including painters, photographers, potters and jewelers are expected to line the streets with their artwork. Food and music will also be available to enjoy. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Music on the Pier

Redondo Beach ends its summer concert series with an encore performance by Danny Dean & the Rockabilly Rebels* on Saturday at 6 p.m. Make sure to bring beach chairs and snacks to this final free concert of the summer in Redondo.

Music in the Park

Manhattan Beach ends its Concert in the Park series Sunday with a Journey tribute by the band Don't Stop Believin'. The free concert starts at 5 p.m. at the Polliwog Park Amphitheater. No dogs, barbecues or wheeled vehicles are allowed in the concert area.

More Concerts

The multiethnic, soulful reggae group Common Sense will perform Saturday night at Brixton in Redondo Beach. The band hits the stage at 9 p.m.

Sweet and Tender Hooligans will perform at Hermosa's Saint Rocke on Saturday. The band was recognized as "Best Cover Band in Los Angeles" by L.A. Weekly in 2003. The group will go on at 9 p.m.

The rock-meets-reggae group Tribal Seeds will perform Sunday night at Brixton in Redondo. The band's authentic sound will start to fill the venue at 9 p.m.

Punk-inspired jams with reggae undertones are hitting Saint Rocke on Sunday. Too Rude will perform its self-titled album for the first time ever, starting at 9 p.m.

* Funk-inspired Sourgrass Band was originally scheduled to perform at the concert.
