'Flow' Exhibit Probes the Concepts, Process Behind the Art

Retired Mira Costa High School art teacher Peggy Zask is among the artists whose work will be on display during the "Flow" exhibit, opening Friday at the Manhattan Beach Creative Arts Center with a public reception from 7-9 p.m.

A talk by the artists launches the evening Friday at 6 p.m.

Zask is joined in the exhibit by artists Elizabeth Casuga, Nancy Voegeli-Curran, Dawn Ertl, Esmeralda Montes and Ian Pines, according to the city website.

The artists, working in mediums that include painting, drawing, weaving, ceramics, and installation art, will also discuss how the "Flow" concept was interwoven with their artwork in the exhibit.

The concept of Flow, developed by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the field of Positive Psychology, is a form of Optimal Experience in which an individual’s skills rise to meet the challenges they are faced with, coinciding with the artist's sensation of fluidity in his/her work.

Interviews were conducted with each of the participating artists to reveal their internal processes that resulted in the artworks on display, according to the city website.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 10 and can be seen Tuesdays from 2-6 p.m., Wednesdays from 4-8 p.m., Thursdays from 2-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m.
