Power Out in Downtown Manhattan Beach After Transformer Explosion

Power is out for a large swath of downtown Manhattan Beach businesses and homes after a transformer appeared to explode above The Strand House Restaurant shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday.

The power outage currently includes The Strand House and most bars and restaurants along Manhattan Beach Boulevard. The pier and homes along the Strand are also without power.

Patch happened to be 20 feet away from the transformer when it exploded and witnessed the whole incident.

Manhattan Beach firefighters responded to the scene at around 9:10 p.m. Southern California Edison crews were also on the scene within 10 minutes of the explosion.

There is no word yet when the power will be restored.
