End Nears for 60 Something Mermaid

The legendary restaurant and cocktail bar in Hermosa Beach will have new owners soon. This weekend could be the last days for the legendary hangout as it now stands.

Regulars and Mermaid lovers filtered in and out Friday afternoon, exchanging hellos, catching up on the latest news and wondering where they'll go to gather when the oceanfront hangout changes hands. The Hermosa Beach restaurant is one of a dying breed of old-time establishments left in the Beach Cities.

With the property the restaurant/cocktail bar sits on set to close escrow as soon as early next week, word has been getting out that folks better hurry in if they want to visit the place before it conceivably changes.

Word is that the new owners will shut the doors for a few weeks to make minor renovations. Exactly when the doors will close for good under current ownership remains to be seen but this weekend could very well be the Mermaid's last in its current operational mode.

I hate to see these old beach places go...

All the threatening stories of imminent change drew us in to enjoy one last dinner at The Mermaid late last night. (We feared getting shut out Sunday night, especially after the beach concert!) Of course, it was the usual warm and happy mix of wonderfully friendly and unpretentious folks -- ranging from a few who have likely been stopping by since The 'Maid's opening era of the 50's, to many who have more recently ventured beyond the surface to discover a true taste of the original, authentic charm of our beach cities. We all know things change with time, but ... well -- some changes are certainly harder to accept than others. Thanks to Boots Thelen and family for preserving such a cultural institution (and entire block!) for so many years.

Once again Hermosa Beach loses another one of it's famous places.Sad to see it go but thanks for all the fun times that was had there to all the parties in the back, and of course Joe Sunday nights, great another overpriced Hotel! Just what we need!!

Thanks Gerry for one of your final, interesting reviews of the Mermaid. BUT, there may be a few more fun times there as I heard it will soon close for a minor face-lift and then re-open, still as the Mermaid, but run by another restaurant company. Since there are no permits or plans for the property yet, we could be partying there for a few more years to come! Hope so, as I agree with Pat above "Just what we need, another Hotel"!

The Mermaid does not need a facelift, minor or otherwise. It is perfect just the way it is. Leave it alone until it has to go the way of other local landmarks.

Ditto to that. Leave it alone. It's so sad like losing an old friend that you grew up with and new for years and hungout with and had so many good times together. ;( DC
