Mother's Day by the Numbers

Here are some statistics about Mother's Day. Do you know what the top names for male and female babies in 2010 were? Read on!

The day when millions of Moms across the country are celebrated with flowers and homemade cards is Sunday, May 13. Here are some facts about baby names, florists, and Mother's Day history, all from the U.S. Census Bureau:

The Mother's Day commemoration, now nearly 100 years old, was sparked by Anna Jarvis, who organized the first observances of the day in 1908. In 1914, Congress finally designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

There were nearly 85 million mothers in the U.S. in 2009, and about 5 million were stay-at-home moms.

The most popular baby names for boys and girls, respectively, in 2010 were Jacob and Isabella.

There were slightly more than 17,000 florist establishments nationwide in 2009, which employed the 75,855 people who prepared, delivered and sold floral arrangements on Mother's Day.

Among the 15 surveyed states, California was the leading provider of cut flowers in 2009, which accounts for 75 percent of domestic flower production.

The 99 greeting card-publishing establishments in 2009 employed 11,044 people.

There were 14,279 cosmetics, beauty supplies and perfume stores nationwide in 2009, in addition to 24,973 jewelry stores.
