Winning Photo Captures Horses, Police, Beachgoers on the Sand

Manhattan Beach resident Charlie Scholz won the recent Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professional Association's Fourth of July photo contest, said the organization.

Scholz' winning shot was of police and sheriffs riding horses on the Fourth this year. He managed to get the picturesque Manhattan Beach Pier in the background.

"I was walking through Hermosa Beach toward MB," said Scholz of the photo."Right away I shot a video of the horse patrol on The Strand, then I walked back to the HB Pier to see how many people were on the beach, then off in the distance coming toward me was the horses."

Scholz, who earlier this year won a Redondo Beach Patch photo contest, uses Nikon camera equipment ranging from a point and shoot to pro gear. For the winning shot, he used his "No. 3 camera," he said No. 1 is what he considers his best camera.

"The Pro camera and lens is just too heavy to carry sometimes but it [the winning photo] still turned out good," he told Patch.

The Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professional Association plans to hold more contests, said Jay Gleason, who is working with the group.
