Mushrooms, Santana Avocado at Today's Market

The Manhattan Beach Farmers Market also has citrus, greens, the Daikon Radish, Burdock, pure cane juice and honey for sale today. The market, held in downtown MB, closes at 4 p.m. today.

Mushroom fans can take home a "mushroom medley" bag of portobello, oyster, shiitake, crimini, button and woodear mushrooms from today's  Manhattan Beach Farmers Market, according to Susan Hillyer, market manager.

Today's market, which lasts until 4 p.m. downtown at 14th Street and Morningside Drive, is also the place for cooks who want fresh herbs, produce, citrus and the like.

Why not start your new year with some healthy new habits or continue healthy old ones? The market has a wide selection of citrus, ranging from Cara Cara to Blood Oranges. Grab some Satsumas for snack time. They're easy to peel and contain no seeds.

Gamma has fresh greens, including spinach, the spicy arugula, and mixed greens, and Atkins has the Santana Avocado, which are sweeter than most avocados, making them perfect in shakes.

Other finds at today's market include Daikon Radish and Burdock. Hillyer says that the Daikon Radish contains enzymes that help improve digestion and that Burdock is good for liver function and to detox.

Sweet Swig is offering "the purifying power of raw cane juice," says Hillyer, explaining that "we release toxins when minerals are plentiful." She also likes the "detox elixir, Master Cleanse."

Those looking for a honey that is "not too light, not too strong" will enjoy Wildflower honey, says Hillyer, who says that cold and allergy sufferers have found the honey to be very good.

The MB Farmers Market is held every Tuesday rain or shine. It opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. this time of year.
