Fact vs. Fiction

Fiction – Garments don’t shrink when dry cleaned.

Fact – All garments can shrink if they haven’t been properly pre-shrunk or if they have manufacturing defects.

Normally, dry cleaning should not shrink your clothes.  In fact, clothes are more likely to shrink when washed in water.  If shrinkage exceeds two to three percent when first dry cleaned, which manufacturers consider acceptable, it may be due to manufacturing defects.

Clothing manufacturers must create garments that can be cleaned safely and repeatedly without damage, and that are aesthetically pleasing and in style, often on tight, seasonal deadlines.  In their rush to deliver, they may not properly stabilize garments or elements of clothing.  This defect can lead to excessive shrinkage.  If this happens, we recommend the garment be returned to the retailer or manufacturer.
