New Parking Meters

The City of Manhattan Beach is pleased to announce the planned completion of the installation new technology parking meters in the remaining metered parking locations throughout the City, including City parking lots. This will complete the conversion from old technology meters that accepted coins and the “cash key” as the only methods of payment, in favor of the new technology parking meters that accept credit and debit cards as well as coins. Additional future methods including “pay by cell,” which allows registered users to pay for parking using their mobile telephones, are also being considered.

“This is an important matter of convenience and a practical action by the City,” stated City Manager David Carmany. “The new parking meters are what our residents and patrons expect to see in our beautiful city and now they will have a choice in how they pay for parking virtually citywide. It is possible that those parking on our streets may be able to pay using their smart phones to pay for parking in the near future.”

The City first installed the new technology meters in 2010 at the Pier parking lots and later at all on-street parking meters. The convenient payment methods, and elimination of the need for drivers to carry change, made the meters an instant success. Additional meters have since been added, including at the El Porto beach parking lots. The balance of the meters will be installed in City parking lots and structures by the middle of November, essentially eliminating the old technology meters.

With the elimination of the old meters, the “cash key” previously used as an alternative to coins will no longer function at the parking meters. As a result, the Cash Key recharge station located next to The Kettle restaurant in downtown will be removed in the coming days. Those who have remaining credit balances on their cash keys, or who would like to obtain a full refund of the deposit paid at the time they purchased the cash key, may contact the City Hall Cashier located at 1400 Highland Avenue during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. The Cash Key must be physically returned to confirm the deposit paid and the amount remaining on the key. The City will process and mail a refund check. Please contact the City Hall Cashier at (310) 802-5557 for additional information.
