CPR Gets the 'Hands Only' Treatment

About 185 members of the public were trained in hands-only CPR Tuesday during a Sidewalk CPR event staged at four locations in the city, said Manhattan Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Laursen.

The free training was part of a countywide activity to train more people in hands-only CPR, during which, as its name implies, people giving CPR only use their hands. In Manhattan Beach, city firefighters, Los Angeles County Lifeguards and the all-volunteer Manhattan Beach Community Emergency Response Team taught those who wanted to learn.

Training was provided at the pier, Metlox Plaza, Bristol Farms and Manhattan Village Shopping Center.

"Surviving cardiac arrest greatly depends on immediate CPR from a family member or bystander,” said Manhattan Beach Fire Chief Robert Espinosa. Statistics indicate almost 80 percent of cardiac arrests happen at home.
