In bygone years, a beachfront home would set city residents back $750 and police were expected to buy their own guns and uniforms.

Manhattan Beach wasn't always known for its pristine sands, prized real estate and packed beach volleyball tournaments.

Home economics:

In the early 1900s, property buyers on the Strand constructed buildings for $750. Today, the citywide median home price is $1.6 million.

Skimpy suits censored:

Until 1933, a dress code was enforced for men and women. Beachgoers had to cover up on the pier and the Strand.

Chaplin's wife remarried:

One of Charlie Chaplin's former wives, Lita Grey Chaplin, remarried at American Martyrs Catholic Church in 1938.

Sand shipped to support the war:

During WWII, soldiers packed Manhattan Beach sand into bags to protect airplanes at Mines Field, which is now LAX Airport.

Police patrol:

Manhattan Beach police officer qualifications in 1924: Own your own car, buy your own uniform and weapon, and be appointed by the City Council.
