Grand Prix Riders Take to Streets of Manhattan Beach

The Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix rolled through town Sunday as competitors raced on the course that begins at Live Oak Park and circles Valley Drive/Ardmore Avenue.

Founded in 1962 by local racing legend Ted Ernst, this year's race marks Chevron’s 23rd consecutive year as title sponsor. The Grand Prix includes the world's top cyclists, from six continents, about 1,000 contestants and more than 7,500 spectators, said Rod Spackman, Chevron’s manager of policy, government and public affairs.

The grand prix features nine races that cater to all levels of USA Cycling competitors and community racers.

Kids between the ages of two and 14 take off at 2:40 p.m. Other fan favorite races include the Women’s Pro 1-2 National Criterium Calendar race at 11:10 a.m.; Men’s Category 2 Race at 12:10 p.m. and the Men’s Pro NCC race at 1:10 p.m. 

Kids can race on a bicycle or tricycle, as they compete for various medals.

Every registered participant receives an official race number, T-shirt, medal, goodie bag and Chevron toy car. Adult cyclists may win a portion of the $26,500 in prize money as well as one of the coveted Grand Prix winners’ jerseys.
