Mira Costa Grad Takes 1st in Triathlon

The college student comes from a family of athletes.

A Mira Costa High graduate took first place in the women's division of the Redondo Beach Triathlon Sunday.

Taylor Spivey, 22, completed the course in 43 minutes, 51 seconds, almost four minutes ahead of the second place finisher. The current Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student finished 8th overall in the competition. The triathlon was her first.

Spivey comes from an accomplished athletic family: her dad, Marc, was a competitive triathlete from 1988-97 and her mom, Bonnie, is a world-class swimmer who owns and operates Swimkids in Manhattan Beach.

Spivey did not find the swim event at all difficult, she told the Easy Reader. At Mira Costa, she was a standout water polo player and swimmer and is now a Los Angeles County lifeguard.
