Ocean Water in Manhattan Beach Gets Mixed Scores

One beach area in Manhattan Beach received the worst grade possible, an F, for its ocean water quality in wet weather.

That location, 28th St., received an A for dry weather, as did the other two testing sites in the city at 40th St. and the pier, both of which received year-round A grades, according to Heal The Bay's latest report.

Heal The Bay officials announced the best and worst offenders Thursday during a press conference near the Hermosa Beach Pier. The before-Memorial-Day report release has become an annual tradition.

Hermosa Beach's 26th St. was named to the Honor Roll for earning year-round A+ grades. The city's other monitoring location, 50 yards south of the pier, earned an A in dry weather months, a B in wet weather.

Heal The Bay, whose reports are based on water sampling for fecal bacteria pollution, assigning collection sites a grade based on an A-F scale. The higher the grade, the lower the risk of water-goers getting sick by contracting stomach flu, skin rashes and ear and upper respiratory infections.

In Redondo Beach, the Herondo St. storm drain area took home an A in dry weather and an F in wet months. The south side of its pier got a C in dry and F in wet weather while heading south the water scored better with Topaz St. garnering a C in dry and B in wet weather and Ave. I an A year-round.

To the north, the water in El Segundo at Grand Ave. received an A in dry and a D in wet weather while water near the Imperial Hwy. storm drain earned an A in dry weather and a B in wet.

Ocean water quality in Southern California is affected by pollution flushed out of storm drains during wet weather.
