Residents To Be Without Power 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

About 3,500 Southern California Edison customers are expected to be without power from 9 a.m. Wednesday until as late as 10 p.m., said Scott Gobble of SCE. The outage will allow SCE to perform system upgrades to the substation at Duncan and Dianthus streets in Manhattan Beach.

Customers ranging from Fourth Street in Hermosa Beach to 16th Street in Manhattan Beach from the ocean to Sepulveda Boulevard could be affected.

Gobble said impacted customers were sent postcard notifications from SCE which should been received last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

He said customers should keep their refrigerator and freezer doors shut throughout the power outage. If they do that, all items inside should be fine.

Any perishables customers will use during the power outage should be placed in an ice chest before the scheduled outage. That way, customers do not need to open their refrigerator or freezer.

Gobble also said that when power comes back on, customers should wait approximately 30 minutes to then dump the ice in their freezer. This prevents an automatic ice dispenser from being frozen.

  • Learn how to manually open security gates and garage doors.
  • Notify any security companies that monitor your home or business.
  • Protect computers, televisions and other sensitive equipment by unplugging them.
  • If your business has no backup power supply, consider renting one."
Gobble said Wednesday's work is the beginning of rebuilding the substation during the next two to three months. The station will be de-energized with an electrical source feed from another location put in place so work can be done safely in the substation.
