Surfer Cut by Skeg Taken to Hospital

A surfer cut by his board's skeg Wednesday was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, said Manhattan Beach Police Sgt. Ron Walker.

The incident happened in the ocean off 4th Street around 11 a.m. Wednesday. The 48-year-old male had at least one laceration on his leg, said Walker. Los Angeles County lifeguards provided assistance on the sand as did a Manhattan Beach Police Department beach patrol.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division, which staffs South Bay beaches, recommends to, as posted on its Facebook page Wednesday, "Always swim and surf near an open lifeguard station and never swim alone!"
