Thanksgiving Spotlight: Mark Burton

This MB resident indulges in a family backgammon tournament complete with trophy on Thanksgiving.

Name: Mark Burton

Age: 59

City of residence: Manhattan Beach

Occupation: Retired municipal counsel. After 31 years of public service, I retired as a senior assistant city attorney.

How long have you lived in MB? My wife and I have lived in MB for more than 10 years and I have lived in the South Bay area for over 50 years.

What are some things that you like about MB? I like everything about MB.  The quality of life in MB is second to none. MB is such a wonderful city for families with excellent city services. MB is a safe town with excellent public safety services. MB has great recreation and parks activities and programs. MB weather is ideal and our downtown is delightful, with such a small town charm.

What don’t you like about MB? What's not to like?

What will you be doing on Thanksgiving and whom will you be with? My wife and I, and our four "twenty something" children, will be having a wonderfully cooked turkey dinner at my mother in law's, who lives in Manhattan Village. We will be joined by my MB brother-in-law, his wife and two sons. Other family members will also be joining us, including one of my brothers.

What will your Thanksgiving meal consist of? My mother-in-law and wife are extraordinary cooks. So, the turkey will be moist and the stuffing very tasty! And, I'm sure we will have something chocolate with vanilla ice cream for dessert.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish? Why? My favorite Thanksgiving dish is having leftover turkey and stuffing, the day after Thanksgiving. Since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I guess I enjoy the opportunity to enjoy it twice!

What is your favorite thing about Thanksgiving? Family! After dinner, we all have a backgammon tournament, with the winner having his or her name being engraved on the trophy. The trophy is named after my father-in-law, a longtime MB resident, who passed three years ago.
