Unpaid Parking Tickets? You Could Get the Boot

The city of Manhattan Beach has two new revenue-producing tools: automatic license plate readers.

Purchased in February, the two readers allow community services officers to identify vehicles that have five or more outstanding tickets, qualifying them to have a boot put on.

In April, the two new readers were responsible for the collection of $8,500, said City Manager David Carmany. In May, the take was $6,500.

One Mira Costa High School student had more than $1,500 in unpaid parking citations.

Each reader was installed on a small Manhattan Beach Police Department truck assigned to the city's Parking and Animal Control Services.
