Weekend: It's All About the Fair

Manhattan Beach is the place to be this weekend for the annual 10k race and the two-day Hometown Fair, with all of its fun for all ages! Donate blood during the Matt Johnson Memorial Blood Drive at the fair.

Where and when: Crowne Plaza, 300 N. Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach; Friday-Sunday

Why go: The animals come out this weekend at the Antheria expo—a three-day festival for those who love anthropomorphics ("humanized" objects or animals). Activities include a variety show, movies, animation exhibitions and a fursuit parade!

Where and when: Third Street and Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach; Saturday, 7:30 a.m.

Why go: The volunteers behind this race that began in Oct. 1978 have kept the race fun with a variety of categories and a USA Track and Field certified course. Runners from eight years into their 80s take to the streets of MB running or walking.

Price: Adult, $30. Under 15, $25. Registration only available in person until 7 p.m. Friday at Village Runner, 1840 N. Sepulveda Blvd., MB; 310-546-1888, or until sold out. Credit card (extra fee), cash or check accepted. No race day registration.

39TH ANNUAL MANHATTAN BEACH HOMETOWN FAIR

Where and when: Live Oak Park, N. Valley Drive and 15th Street, Manhattan Beach; Saturday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Why go: Raise funds for local charity organizations while enjoying arts and crafts, food, games and fun. A long-standing community tradition!

Price: Free admission

12TH ANNUAL MATT JOHNSON MEMORIAL BLOOD DRIVE

Where and when: Manhattan Beach Fire Department, 400 15th Street; Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday, 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Why go: Give the gift of life by donating blood during this hallmark event that honors Manhattan Beach native Matt Johnson, who lost his life at 14 to acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2000. The first drive was held at the MB Hometown Fair in Oct. 2000 a month before Matt died. His family, neighbors, city employees and others continue to honor him with this namesake event.

AES POWER HARVEST: GROWING OUR COMMUNITIES TOGETHER 

Where and when: AES Redondo Beach, 1100 N. Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach; Saturday, 11 a.m.

Why go: Enjoy free food and music, check out the hands-on electric bike exhibit and take a tour inside the Power Plant. Plus facepainting, a moon bounce and free pumpkins for the first 500 guests!

Price: Free

A CELEBRATION OF SOUTH BAY’S WINE AND FOOD

Where and when: Chez Melange, 1611 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach; Sunday, 2 p.m.

Why go: Celebrate winemakers and winery owners from the South Bay at this culinary feast. Stations will be set up throughout Chez Mélange, Bouzy Gastropub, and BarComida, with special dishes from each restaurant and tastes from each winery.
