Weekend: Remembering 9/11

Start the weekend off with fun activities like tribute bands and a horse show—Sunday calls for a more serious note as we remember 9/11 on this 10th anniversary.

Where and when: Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Blvd., Rolling Hills Estates; Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Why go: Head over to Ernie Howlett Park and celebrate this long-standing equestrian tradition. Besides the show, other activities include a petting zoo, pony rides and face painting. Friday is free admission.

6th ANNUAL D-MAN FESTIVAL

Where and when: Seaside Lagoon, 200 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach; Saturday, 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Why go: Raising money for the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the annual D-Man Festival is named for South Bay surfer Darren D-Man Marsee, who passed away from the disease in 2005. Line up includes performances from Tomorrows Bad Seeds, The Black Pacific, Hoist the Colors and more.

Price: $20-$25

PIANIST KARINE POGHOSYAN

Where and when: Trinity Lutheran Church, 1001 N. Rowell Ave., Manhattan Beach; Saturday, 2 p.m. 

Why go: Poghosyan, who made her Carnegie Hall debut at the young age of 23, comes to the South Bay for a series of classical concerts. Saturday, she'll play in Manhattan Beach as part of Trinity Lutheran's 10 Year Anniversary of "The Previews" concerts; Sunday, the pianist heads over to Rancho Palos Verdes to partake in the "Sundays at Two" musical series.

Price: Free, donations appreciated.

FAN HALEN

Where and when: Saint Rocke, 142 Pacific Coast Hwy., Hermosa Beach; Saturday, 9 p.m. 

Why go: It's Saturday night—get your party on with Fan Valen, a high-energy rock tribute act to Van Halen. Opening sets by Stone Temple Co-Pilots (an STP tribute), Without Warning and Thunderchief. 21 and over, please.

Price: $10-$12

HONORING OUR HEROES... POLICE, FIRE & LIFEGUARD APPRECIATION PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Where and when: American Martyrs Church, O'Donnell Hall, adjacent Deegan Place and church parking structure (PDF map attached), Manhattan Beach; Sunday, 7:45 a.m. - 11 a.m. after 7, 8 and 9:30 a.m. masses.

Why go: Break fast with and give thanks for our police, fire and lifeguard personnel who devote their lives to public service. Proceeds benefit police and fire funds. 

Price: Free to all emergency personnel. $20 per family or $5 per adult and $3.50 per child 12 and under.

9/11 NATIONAL MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE: STOP AND REMEMBER

Where and when: Wherever you are; Sunday, 10 a.m. PDT

Why go: Throughout the nation, first responders, houses of worship, and other establishments will sound sirens and bells at 10 a.m. PDT in a sign to stop and take a minute to remember those taken from us in 9/11.

Price: Free

9/11 CANDLELIGHT VIGIL

Where and when: 124 Sapphire St., Redondo Beach; Sunday, 7:30 - 8 p.m.

Why go: Bring a candle to Reverend Maitreya Bhagavan Friend's Empty Chair Memorial and and pay respects to those lost in the 9/11 tragedy, as well as America's fighting men and women who have given their lives for this country.
