Community Corner

First Manhattan Beach Relay For Life

What is Relay?
Relay for Life (“Relay”) is a community-owned, and volunteer-driven fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (“ACS”).  Relay is a 24 hour event that gives communities a chance to celebrate the lives of people who battle cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease, with education and information about prevention and resources for cancer patients and caregivers.  Because cancer never sleeps, many teams camp out and take turns walking around a track all night to raise money for the ACS.

Envision the community joined together
for one cause in Manhattan Beach’s First Relay.
Relay begins as we cheer on cancer survivors and caregivers who walk the first lap of Relay.  The scene is positive, cathartic and communal, with music, games and ceremonies.  In the early evening, teams and their invited guests picnic and socialize. After the sun sets, we light candles placed around the track in memory of those we’ve lost to cancer and walk a lap in silent memory among the candles. Our invited guests leave, and for the overnight teams, the night begins!

It is all good.  Relay is a powerful community building, fun event. It is good for morale, as teams from all over Manhattan Beach spend a day together for this cause. But most importantly, it is good for the fight against cancer.  Last year, California raised $30 million.  Nationally, Relay is projected to raise $385 million this year. These dollars go toward ACS’s Research, Patient Support, Prevention, Early Detection, Cancer Information and Advocacy programs.
