Thursday and Friday are the final days of dineLA Summer Restaurant Week. This bi-annual dining event was established to introduce diners to the extensive assortment of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County. Local foodies and visitors to the area will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of specially priced prix fixe menus from some of LA’s best restaurants during this this period. It should come as no surprise that a variety of restaurants throughout the South Bay will be participating in this culinary event: American Farmhouse Tavern & Dining Hall, , , Gaetano’s, Il Fornaio, Mucho Ultima Mexicana, Second Story at The Belamar Hotel, The Strand House and Zinc @Shade, to name a few. Some of the restaurants will feature lunch, some will offer dinner, and some will present both, so be sure to check the website. Due to the popularity of this event, advance reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are welcome but there is no guarantee they can be accommodated.
CA 101: Interpreting Life along the Pacific Coast is a juried art exhibition presented by Friends of Redondo Beach Arts, Redondo Beach Art Group, The Legado Corporation and the . The opening reception for the event will be held Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the PVI Gallery at the Palos Verdes Inn. The event features a variety of pieces from artists hailing from Santa Barbara to San Diego and will be displayed this weekend and again on Aug. 3-5 in the ‘Pop Up’ Gallery located at 1700 Pacific Coast Hwy. (the old building) in South Redondo Beach. Hours for both weekend shows are as follows:
- Friday: 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.
- Saturday: noon until 8 p.m.
- Sunday: noon – 6 p.m.

Enjoy an Evening Under the Stars at the 26th Annual Gourmet Food & Wine Festival this Saturday from 6-9:30 p.m. hosted by American Honda Motor Company. All proceeds will benefit Torrance Memorial Hospital. Tickets are $125 per person or $200 per pair. Dine on gourmet cuisine from over 30 premiere restaurants and wineries. The City of Torrance presents Movies in the Park this Saturday at 8 p.m. This month, the Walt Disney classic Alice in Wonderland will be shown at Greenwood Park and admission is free. Vanguard Surf & Skate presents a Mid-Summer’s Skate Jam & Benefit for SkateparkPV on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The event features a skate contest, music by DJ Bassjam, raffles, prizes and giveaways as well as a free session open to everyone from beginners to pros. This is your chance to skate with Team Vanguard and other special guests on fun boxes, rails, ramps, quarter pipes, half pipe and new obstacles from Keen Ramps. Bring some lunch money because Cilantro Cantina will be on site dishing out tacos and other refreshments. The dollar raffle features items from Z Flex, Nike, Nikon and others. All the lunch and raffle proceeds as well as 10 percent of the day’s shop sales go straight to build SkateparkPV! There will also be a special guest signing with Jay Adams. Adams is an American skateboarder most prominently known as one of the original members of Z-Boys skateboarding team and is considered one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. Adams is featured prominently in the award winning documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys and in the 2005 dramatized film account of the Z-Boys origins, Lords of Dogtown. Hey! It’s for a great cause! The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau is proud to present the Summer Concert Series produced by Saint Rocke Productions. The first show of the series takes place this Sunday and features funk and soul by Nikka Costa with special guest the Dayton Joseph Scott Band. The biggest beach event of the year starts this Tuesday! The 2012 International Surf Festival begins with the annual Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament and gets underway Tuesday and runs through Wednesday. This hugely popular competition has been a local tradition since 1957. Pros, wannabes and everyone in between will flood the beach in an array of crazy costumes for three straight days of the most intense volleyball ever seen. Teams of six will compete for prizes and those all-important bragging rights. The tournament has gained national attention and draws crowds of over 60,000 spectators and 200 teams. In recent years, the event became known as ‘the party of the year’ attracting a rowdy mob more interested in partying than volleyball. So this year, the city of Manhattan Beach decided to schedule the competition for mid-week as opposed to the weekend. This is one event you don’t want to miss, so head to the beach for some insane volleyball action and one of the South Bay’s most legendary parties. The finals happen on Wednesday. The International Surf Festival continues with the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Medal of Valor Dinner next Thursday, Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. at the in Redondo Beach. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $20 if not sold out. On Aug. 3, the LA County Lifeguard Championships take place at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Events include U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter and L.A. County Lifeguard rescue demonstrations, run relays and other lifeguard competitions. Saturday and Sunday will be packed with events all day long. The fun-filled weekend includes surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest and more beach volleyball. The International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. Chapter 96 of the Experimental Aircraft Association presents a Fly-In and Model Airplane Exposition on Sunday, August 5th at the Compton/Woodley Airport from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy a fun-filled family event on the flight line at Compton Airport and watch dozens of control line and radio controlled model aircraft perform stunts and take part in a landing contest. Model aircraft flights run from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The event also features full-scale and experimental aircraft displays and other types of flying machines with owners and pilots on hand to answer your questions. Flight simulators will be available with live, hands-on training opportunities as well as glider assembly and flying for kids 10 and under. Hobby vendors will be on site offering their products and services to assist interested attendees on how to get into the sport. Lunch and refreshments will be available as well. Admission is $3 per person and kids under 10 get in free. Free parking is located on site and folding chairs are recommended so you can watch all the action in comfort.
