I haven’t quite figured out why there are so many events happening this weekend….maybe families are taking the last few summer weekends to get away…or maybe nobody wants to compete with Fiesta Hermosa over Labor Day Weekend. Whatever the reason, there are an inordinate number of special events taking place between August 24th and 26th. I’m making my plans now to take advantage of as many of them as I can!

Rock, acoustic, country, blues and jazz…you can find them all at the taking place this Friday and Saturday at the . This celebration of diverse guitar styles features Grammy Award winners Eric Johnson and Albert Lee and Renegade Creation with Robben Ford and Michael Landau. Guitarists John Jorgenson, Peppino D’Agostino and Doug MacLeod will be performing as well. Tickets range from $30 to $125 and are available online. There will be additional activities taking place outside the venue prior to the concerts that are all free and open to the public: live outdoor entertainment, product demos and gift giveaways. The Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series presents the Manhattan Beach Open beginning Friday and running through Sunday. This is a three-day, double elimination tournament with live coverage of the finals on the NBC Sports Network. If you don’t already know, this is one of the most legendary volleyball tournaments in the history of the sport. The MB Open boasts fifty years of extraordinary competition and set in motion the addition of volleyball to the summer Olympics. The volleyball elite will be competing for a $100,000 grand prize as well has having their names permanently enshrined on the Manhattan Beach Pier’s Volleyball Walk of Fame. The tournament will be located just south of the Manhattan Beach Pier at the western most end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard. The qualifiers happen on Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The main draw takes place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the semi-finals and final happen on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Visit the live webcast page for updates at josecuervoprobeachvolleyballseries.com.

The is celebrating its Grand Re-Opening on Saturday! The celebration will be an all-day event beginning at noon and running until 8 p.m. Once the pride and joy of the California coast, The Pier is going back in time to return to its glory days. Its vintage buildings and surrounding public areas have recently commenced a multi-year, phased renewal program. Everyone is welcome to attend this historic event. There will be a beer garden on site and vendors offering merchandise for sale. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. with the Mayor and other dignitaries in attendance. Let the fundraising begin! Now that the city of Rolling Hills Estates has approved construction of a skate facility to be located in Ernie Howlett Park, funds need to be raised to build it. Whole Foods Market in Torrance is a local supporter of Skatepark PV and will be hosting a couple of fundraisers over the next few weeks with more planned in the months to come. On Saturday everyone is invited to a Grass-fed Burger BBQ starting at noon at the Whole Foods Market located at 2655 Pacific Coast Hwy. in Torrance. The lunch special is only $5 and includes a burger, salad and drink. Hey! Ya gotta eat lunch, and that’s a great deal. All proceeds from the event go directly to benefit Skatepark PV. The El Segundo Police Officers Association is proud to present their biggest and best car show yet! The 15th Annual Main Street Car Show takes place on Saturday. This incredibly popular event has grown year after year and features over 400 vintage, classic and new model show cars. This event is open to the public and admission is free. In addition to the car show there will be apparel and other merchandise for sale and of course, an incredible selection of shops and eateries up and down Main Street. The event begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. and takes place along Main Street between El Segundo Boulevard and Mariposa Avenue in beautiful downtown El Segundo. This show is for all you motor heads out there. All proceeds from the event are used to support several worthy causes throughout the community. Hermosa Beach Friends of the Parks and the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association present Movies in the Park on Saturday in Valley Park. This fun, family-friendly event begins at 4 p.m. with games and activities, hot dogs, popcorn and other refreshments. The animated feature film, The Smurfs, begins after dark. You’ll want to be comfortable so bring a blanket and beach chairs but no high-back chairs, please! A suggested donation of $5 per person over 3 years old is much appreciated and pets and alcohol are not permitted. Valley Park is located at Valley Drive and Gould Avenue in Hermosa Beach. is hosting a new exhibit “Rock Seen: 30 Years of Rock Images by Don Adkins”. Adkins is a Redondo Beach-based photographer with the majority of his work revolving around the world of rock music, both in the studio and on stage for a variety of clients and publications. His work includes images of Elton John, Iggy Pop, U2, Genesis, David Byrne, Sammy Hagar, Stevie Nicks, Bon Jovi, Peter Gabriel, Jackson Browne, Alanis Morrisette and many others. The opening reception takes place Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit runs through Sept. 17. An additional exhibit by Bob Masse features Rock Posters. The Trump National Golf Club is proud to present the 4th Annual Wine & Beer Festival on Sunday with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy. The event takes place from 12 to 4 p.m. and features live entertainment, gourmet food trucks, raffle prizes and of course, an extensive selection of wine from more than forty different wineries and beer from over 20 different breweries.
