Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for June 12, 2014

This Sunday is Father’s Day and there are plenty of events and fun activities taking place this weekend for the whole family to enjoy!

Support local merchants and get a jump start on the weekend at the Downtown Torrance Market Place! Every Thursday, Old Town Torrance takes to the streets with gifts, arts and crafts, jewelry, clothing, food and produce, antiques and more! The weekly event features live music, tastings and product demonstrations from over thirty vendors and runs from 3 to 8 p.m. Downtown restaurants and shops stay open late with sidewalk sales and Market Place specials and there is plenty of free parking. Walk In, Dance Out hosts Swing & Sway at the Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach the second Friday of every month – that’s tomorrow, Friday, June 13 - from 8 to 11 p.m. If you’ve ever dreamed of tripping the light fantastic, this is your chance. The South Bay ballroom dancing community is extraordinarily welcoming and encouraging, so even if you’re a beginner, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practice your moves. Walk In Dance Out offers dance instruction at several locations throughout the South Bay. Many of the students and instructors attend this monthly event and are delighted to share their knowledge and expertise. The cost is $10 per person with light refreshments and a no-host bar. Cruise at the Beach happens every Friday night through October with vintage automobiles on display in the Ruby’s Diner parking lot from 4 to 8 p.m. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their hot rods, street rods and muscle cars and strut their stuff. The evening also features trivia, trophies and raffle. Ruby’s Diner is located at 245 North Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. The Redondo Pier Association hosts Movies on the Boardwalk at the Redondo Beach Pier every Friday in June. Tomorrow night, Friday, June 13, they’re screening Soul Surfer. These events are free and open to the public and take place between 7 and 10 p.m. Attendees may bring low-back beach chairs. Terrenea is proud to present the Terranea Unplugged Summer Concert Series. Every Friday, Saturday and select Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m., guests will enjoy live music in Nelson’s Beer Garden overlooking the deep blue. If you’ve ever driven along the coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, chances are you’ve caught a glimpse of the Point Vicente Lighthouse. Built in 1926, the 67 foot high tower is perched on a cliff offering breathtaking views of the endless Pacific. The Lighthouse is open to the public on the second Saturday of each month – that’s this Saturday, June 14 - from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free. While you’re there, be sure to visit the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. After climbing the lighthouse tower and touring the Interpretive Center, stroll along the scenic trail or relax at one of the picnic tables dotting the grounds while taking in vistas of Catalina Island and contemplating the deep blue. Pack a picnic basket and prepare for a lovely afternoon. The Point Vicente Lighthouse is located at 31501 Palos Verdes Drive West in Rancho Palos Verdes. The South Bay is going to the dogs! Doma Kitchen host Pups on the Patio Saturday, June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog) for an evening of fun featuring special dog treats, canine art from Artlife Gallery and food and beverage specials for the two legged attendees. Hosted by the Manhattan Country Club, the Manhattan Wine Auction is the largest charity wine auction in Southern California.  The event takes place Saturday evening and features wine and food tastings, live and silent auctions, live entertainment, music and dancing. This event sold out within hours of its announcement, so if you don’t already have tickets, you’re out of luck. Proceeds from the annual Manhattan Wine Auction benefit the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF).

Support local artists at the eleventh annual Hermosa Beach Artwalk on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15. Artwalk has grown considerably over the years and now takes place on the lawn of the Community Center between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days. The event features the work of nearly 100 talented artists in a variety of mediums including photography, glass, metal, paintings, ceramics and mixed media. Attendees will enjoy live music and food for purchase along with arts and crafts for children. The City of Manhattan Beach celebrates all things paternal with the annual Father’s Day Volleyball Tournament on Sunday, June 15 from 9 to noon. This year, forget the ties and grooming products! It’s a fun way for the kids to spend some quality time with pops (and moms will enjoy a little downtime)! Registration will vary depending on the age and number of participants – anywhere between $50 and $100. There are four different age divisions and everyone will receive a T-shirt and other giveaways. This is a recreational tournament with pool play only. Proceeds from the event benefit Project Fatherhood. Join the Beach Cities Health District for a free fitness series, Zumba in the Park, every Monday evening from June 2 through July 28. The weekly event will take place at Julia Field in Alta Vista Park through June 30 and will continue at an alternate location through July 28. Get moving and de-stress with this free, public event that brings together the community, fitness and fun! Everyone is welcome to join and you can participate at your own pace. Registration starts at 6 p.m. with the hour long Zumba class beginning at 6:30. All participants must sign a waiver and are encouraged to wear comfortable, athletic clothing, bring a jacket in case of cool weather and a water bottle.
