Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for May 15, 2014

You won’t hear any complaints from me about this record breaking weather we’re experiencing – I adore the heat and will take it any day over May Gray. That being said, it’s American Craft Beer Week – drink beer, stay cool!

Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach hosts a monthly Wine Academy on the third Thursday of each month. – that’s tonight, Thursday, May 15. Wine loving friends can gather to socialize, taste and learn from experts about new wines in a relaxed, fun, atmosphere. This popular event is open to the public and runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and offers wine lovers an opportunity to enjoy an intimate, casual, wine-centric social gathering. Well-priced at $25 per person in advance, $35 at the door, the Wine Academy features expert, interactive presentations of exceptional wines, boutique and/or limited production wines, along with tantalizing wine-paired hors d’oeuvres prepared by Executive Chef Chris Garasic. The American Martyrs Parents Association presents the 41 annual Sophisticated Snoops Home Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18. Guest will have an opportunity to view six enchanting and unique homes located in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Presale tickets are $30 and are available for purchase at various locations throughout the South Bay. Tickets will also be for sale at each of the homes for $35. The City of Torrance honors our armed forces at the 55 annual Armed Forces Day Celebration and Parade Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18. The parade takes place on Saturday, May 17 and gets underway at 1:30 p.m. The route runs along Torrance Boulevard starting at Crenshaw Boulevard and ending at City Hall. Each year, the City honors a different military branch – this year highlights the United States Navy. Grand Marshal Rear Admiral Patrick Lorge, Commander, Navy Region Southwest, will lead the parade. Military exhibits, vehicles and support equipment will be on display at the north end of the Del Amo Fashion Center at the lower parking lot on the west side of the parking structure on Friday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 17 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A free concert by the Navy Band Southwest will perform at the James Armstrong Theatre on Friday, May 16 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit the website at http://www.torranceca.gov/ArmedForcesDay.htm.

Join the North Redondo Beach Business Association and Blue Zones Project at the inaugural WalkAbout Redondo on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This family friendly event encourages residents, tourist and business owners to stroll Artesia Boulevard and meet local business owners in a fun and casual atmosphere. Walk or ride your bike to eat, play or shop at the many restaurants and businesses along one of Redondo’s main business corridors. The afternoon will culminate with a community-wide barbeque. Sign in to receive your Walkabout Redondo passport from 10 a.m. to noon. Visit local businesses to get passport stamps and then receive a free BBQ lunch when you present your completed passport. For each passport with 10 or more ‘stamps’, the participant will receive one lunch ticket. Participants may turn in their passports at the BBQ up until 2 p.m. Starting at noon, a BBQ lunch will be served at the Redondo Beach Parks & Recreation parking lot located at 1922 Artesia Boulevard. If participants are unable to visit 10 businesses, a $5 donation for each lunch ticket is requested. Chevron is proud to sponsor the second annual Roundhouse Aquarium Fun Run for the Oceans on Saturday, May 17. This 5K family-friendly run/walk gets underway at 9:30 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier and will benefit the Roundhouse Aquarium. The event will raise funds to support the Aquarium’s ocean education programs and classes. Stop by the Roundhouse after the race to learn more about the oceans and marine life.  Race check-in will be on the north side of the pier in the sand near the showers and pier. The race will begin and end in the wet sand. Registration is $35 per person and includes a T-shirt, water and refreshments. The first, second and third place finishers in each division will receive great prizes. A raffle will be held after race with even more prizes! Raffle tickets are $5 each and you don’t have to participate in the run to buy a ticket and win! Click here for the registration form. The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce and Stella Artois present the first annual Bite at the Beach on Saturday, May 17 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the MBS Media Campus. The event features food and craft beer pairings from all over the South Bay and Los Angeles. This will be an extraordinary event filled with delicious bites, craft beer and wine, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Surfrider Foundation. In addition to fabulous food and beverage pairings, attendees will also have the opportunity to experience panel sessions with well-known Ciserones, highly influential chefs and brew masters. Scheduled panels include The Art and Craft of Beer Pairing and Fun with BEER! General Admission tickets are $100 per person and VIP Tickets are $200, Tickets go on sale April 1. The second annual Tour de Pier is a unique fundraising event that brings one of the hottest indoor fitness activities – stationary cycling – to the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, May 18. The Tour de Pier includes four 50 minute sessions beginning at 9 a.m. Participants can ride solo for all four sessions or be a team captain and recruit up to three teammates to register and ride as a team. In addition to the cycling portion of the Tour de Pier, the event will include a Health Expo with a number of fitness and health related sponsors; a Fun Zone with games, moon bounces and more. The Tour de Pier is organized to raise funds for the cancer community. The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, The LiveSTRONG Foundation and Cancer Support Community. The King Harbor Yacht Club hosts the seventh annual King Harbor Sea Fair on Sunday, May 18 from 12 to 5 p.m. This free, family friendly event offers a unique opportunity to prepare for the summer boating season. Sea Fair promotes safe boating practices and environmental awareness, while highlighting recreational opportunities in our harbor. The event features over 60 local participating organizations, free outrigger canoe and sail boat rides, kid’s crafts and activities, stand-up paddleboard demonstrations, life jacket and safety show and a variety of boat and marine displays. Food and beverages will be available for purchase along with live music and a free raffle drawing with fabulous prizes. In addition, the Irving Johnson Tall Ship will be at this year’s event. Sea Fair attendees can tour the ship while she’s moored in the harbor for FREE! Special passage to and from San Pedro will also be available (for a fee)!
