HAPPY FRIDAY, NEIGHBORS!!! Jan. 25, 2013
"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest."

Confucius

John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961

"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

HEY NEIGHBORS!  I NEED MORE SIGNS IN THE SAND, HILL AND EAST MANHATTAN!  LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ME TO MEET WITH ANYONE IN THOSE AREAS.

WE NEED TO GET THE WORD OUT...if I am goiing to win a seat we will need the swing vote.  If we want a consistent voice for our public schools parents need to vote for me and only me to make the votes count.

What makes me qualified to run for MB City Council and why do I want to be on city council when everyone knows that no matter what decisions you make 50% of the community will not be satisfied. Now is my time.  25 years managing business relationships; MB homeowner 17 years; 3 sons graduated MB public schools; own a small business in Manhattan Beach; annual MB volunteer chairing school events, Little League, MBYB, AYSO, Meals on Wheels, Hometown Fair, beach clean up days, fundraising, working on city wide projects; Neighborhood Watch Block Captain; organizing block parties; graduate Community Police Academy, Leadership Manhattan.  I know I can provide reason and common sense to decision making.  Decisions that are fiscally responsible, fair and just.  At heart I am a volunteer.  I enjoy the role of public servant.  Thank goodness there are those of us around.  Now, would I prefer if my brain was a little more tweaked towards making piles of money...sure.  Spike Milligan once said, "Money can't buy happiness...but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery."If it was not for us "perrenial professional volunteers" you would not have the art, the scoreboards, great school targeted programs, the gardens, the ingredients that help define the charm & provide depth in a community.  So, I guess I am stuck in this role because I LOVE THIS TOWN AND LOVE GIVING BACK TO IT.

MARK LIPPS FOR CITY COUNCIL CALENDAR:  Saturday, Jan. 26 - discuss the issues, meet the candidate at THE RIPE CHOICE CATERING & TO GO KITCHEN @ 312 ROSECRANS (at Highland), 12noon - 2pm.

A quote from George Burns that all candidates should remember, "The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible."

My City Council opponents and I have already had signs removed from yards. Some may have been removed because they were put up without permission or put up at the wrong address.  Yet some may have been taken.  If you think you are helping your favorite candidate that coud backfire with some bad press for that candidate.  IF YOU LOSE ONE OF MY SIGNS PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL REPLACE.

ALSO, ONLY VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE(S) YOU KNOW.  At the polls your ballot will say choose up to  three out of the six candidates.  Common practice at any election is vote for the person you know and then randomly check the other candidate boxes, for whatever reason (party, sex, race, business, etc) to fill out the remaining spots.  If you want your vote to count for your candidate(s) only vote for the candidates you know.  Otherwise your random vote may be the tie-breaker that keeps your candidate(s) out of office.

Historically these few days...I was too young to remember the first 3:

1734 - New York City maids organize to improve working conditions

1848 - Discovery of gold initiates Gold Rush in California

1890 - United Mine Workers formed

1973 - Vietnam Peace Treaty signed in Paris & Supreme Court legalizes abortions

1981 - Iran releases 52 Americans held 444 days

1992 - Americans with Disabilities Act goes into place

OK FOR YOU GUYS WHO STILL HAVE A VHS...and if you are lucky Jay will give you some tips on brewing your own beer.    I"ve got an idea for your next Happy Friday newsletter.I have a collection of aboout 80 VHS tapes that I'd like to give away?It includes everything from feature films to rock concerts.I've replaced most of them with DVD versions and have decided not to replace my VHS tape player. But they are in good condition, and are sitting in slide-out wooden VHS storage cases.Anyone with a good VHS player can still get plenty of entertainment from them and although I need to clean out the space I'd hate to just throw this collection away. The tapes and cabinets are free to anyone who wants to pick them up.Jay AnkeneyTV Technology MagazineNAB Daily 2013220 39th St.Manhattan Beach, CA 90266(310) 545-3983)

EMAIL IS MOST TRUSTED SOURCE OF COMMUNICATION!  If you would like to ask me my position I will let you know via email so that you have it in writing! In a recent lecture on TED, Hancock did not debunk the previous findings about text being less accurate versus face-to-face, but found that of all the media used to communicate, emails prove most trustworthy.

Although there's no hard evidence as yet as to why email is seen as such a truthful medium, the hypothesis is that it is recorded and can be retrieved (if necessary) later. Face-to-face and phone communication are subject to time lapse and faulty recall (by both parties). Texts don't stay around long; and are generally short and cryptic.

Now, the challenge for managers is that whilst email communication may be more trustworthy than others, it lacks the ability to express the appropriate emotion and likewise, elicit or engender an intended emotion - something that is essential for motivating others. In fact, emails can at times elicit emotions in the receiver that are opposite to those that were intended.

So, where does this leave us?

It would seem that as managers, if we have important messages to give or receive, we should use email to establish the facts then back this up (or precede it) with face-to-face communication (or if impractical, via video).

Above all, avoid the use of texting to send or receive information that depends on critical accuracy. Perhaps Lance Armstrong should have been asked the hard questions long ago via email!
