They say politics make strange bedfellows. Its definitely interesting to see the dynamics of our community first hand. Candidates are encouraged to spend a lot of time courting our older adults because they are the only ones who vote in local elections. Case in point, I would never have thought of running for city council 10-years ago because I was busy working (which involved travel); volunteering at many school functions; coaching my kids; playing on my adult hockey team; and spending time with my wife. I am no longer working 9-5; I am no longer coaching my kids or chairing school 5-Ks, etc; my wife now has a business & the roles have reversed where I think she needs to pay more attn to me! This time in my life has allowed me to learn even more about our city. And it is fascinating. So I understand why we cannot get the younger adults to vote. They simply are not focused on our city unless it is directlly impacting them. LET'S FOCUS & MAKE SURE Y0U VOTE ON MARCH 5!!!
If you are not registered to vote you can get the forms from the City Clerk, Post Office, County libraries, County Registrar Office. Must register by Feb. 18 to vote March 5.The deadline to request a Vote by Mail ballot is Feb. 26.
FYI...much of our existing sewer mains are 60+ years old. In phases the city will be installing new 8" & 12" pipe to replace damaged and failing sewer mains. RESPONSE FROM A NEIGHBOR RE THE HOMELESS STATISTIC I SENT LAST WEEK:Yes Mark homelessness is in decline. The Obama Administration made it a priority with a dedication to end veteran homelessness by 2014. All vets can receive vouchers for section 8 housing. The United Way and other organizations made a major shift in their approach to the problem through an initiative called Housing First. Until 3 years ago those living on the street had to demonstrate their worthiness for housing by meeting certain criteria. The shift puts people in housing first and then connects them to services that they need to stay successfully in their homes. Last year was the first time in decades that the merchants in Santa Monica did not have the homeless at the top of their list of complaints. And my opinion on the debt issue: Probably not a good idea to give tax breaks to people while we were fighting two wars. I have been paying into my "entitlement" programs i.e. Social Security and Medicare since my first job at 18 so I think that label inappropriate.

I heard this at a local business meeting...Target Stores are combating the online shopping by offering to beat any price Amazon may offer online. Now Target can do that because of economies of scale with so many stores. Not so much with mom & pops. Im glad the chains are thinking like that BUT AS CITIZENS OF A QUAINT COMMUNITY YOU NEED TO PUT A VALUE ON OUR LOCAL CHARM. If you do not want it to go away then you should pay the extra dollar (if necessary) to support local business. Not to mention the tax revenue a city receives when you buy local. TO KEEP OUR TOWN LOCAL YOU MUST THINK LOCAL!!!
