HAPPY FRIDAY, NEIGHBORS!!! SEPT. 28, 2012

HFN has been a weekly blast for years. Pouring out his thoughts about husbands, wives, kids, schools, whatever his ADHD mind is thinking.

HAPPY FRIDAY, NEIGHBORS!!! Sept. 28, 2012 "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."  -- Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)Thanks, for sharing, KT.

BELOW EMAIL FROM OUR FRIENDS AT PAGES BOOKSTORE.  I concur with a few of my own comments.  I was also at the Economic Forum and the one constant mentioned by all speakers was how lucky we are to live in MB...our houses go right to the water; pedestrian lifestyle (bike, walk, scooter); great public school system...yet it does not happen by accident. GIVE BACK BY USING LOCAL BUSINESS; GIVE BACK BY VOLUNTEERING LOCALLY; GIVE BACK BY DONATING WHEN YOU CAN TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS.  Whenever you walk around MB you may take for granted the sculptures,; the chip path; the bicycle racks...details that give our community character through the sweat equity of volunteers.  No community is perfect but ours may be closer than many. Buying online is convenient...but developing local relationships with our locally owned stores creates a healthier lifestyle.  Research tells us you will live longer if you get off your ass.  So what if a local operator is a few cents more...what value do you put on relationships.  I dont know anyone in mgmt at Whole Foods but I know the owners of Grow.  I dont know anyone at Barnes & Noble but I know the owners of Pages.  I dont know anyone at Subway but I know the lady who owns The Ripe Choice.  (i think she is cute and i flirt with her daily. She is playing hard to get but I will perservere.)  Not to mention the tax revenue the city gets if we buy local.

"The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it."  -- Henry David Thoreau

The value of our community is what we are willing to put into it. SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY...VOLUNTEER, DONATE & BUY LOCAL.  Many people ask others to donate to their cause...yet did they donate when approached for someone else's cause.  Lets scratch each others back.
FROM THE LADIES AT PAGES:

Dear Friends:

Find out what's happening in Manhattan Beachwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Sadly, one of our favorite stores has announced that they are closing.  Christie's has been in the business of providing fine stationery and creating gorgeous invitations and announcements for 28 years.  A few months ago, Magpie also closed their doors with the intention of reopening in Santa Barbara.  It's sad to see these great stores Manhattan Beach independents go away.  Our downtown area has so much to offer, but if you want to keep it that way, its important that you actually shop in the stores instead of going online.  We truly appreciate the people who loyally shop at{pages} as we know you have a choice.

We attended the MB Chamber of Commerce's Economic Forum this week and the economic pulse is currently strong.  People are eating out more, Toyota's sales are 42% ahead of last year and Shade Hotel's average occupancy rate is 97%.  "Facebook" and other social media are "critical" to business.   And happily, most of the speakers said that Manhattan Beach is the best place on earth.  We have a great local government and our community is second to none.

Let's keep it that way.  Shop local!  Shop independent!  We all need to support each other.  Thank you for your support here at{pages}.

Hope to see you soon,

"We really are very community driven," Stanisich explained. "We're just trying to say that we're here, and that we're a small guy but that we want to be a big player."

Plans for expanding the Two Guns Espresso name have already begun to take shape. Oram and Stanisich have entered into a business partnership with The Ripe Choice Catering company, located on Rosecrans Avenue near the intersection of Highland Avenue.

Tammy Lipps, owner of The Ripe Choice, which offers a to go menu for walk-in customers, said her shop offers Two Guns Espresso daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Said Tammy's husband Mark Lipps before the coffee was at Ripe Choice, "The coffee being sold will be branded Two Guns Espresso. It will be a limited extension of their place on Sepulveda."

"As a business, The Ripe Choice hopes to provide a quality coffee service lacking on the north side that will also build recognition for Tammy's catering and specialty retail to go menu. To go with the coffee, Tammy will be offering breakfast panini sandwiches, fresh pastries and fruit," Mark told MB Patch via email.

Tammy said The Ripe Choice will offer its breakfast fare soon.

TEXAS BEER JOINT SUES LOCAL CHURCH OVER LIGHTNING STRIKE!

(This should keep you chuckling for a while)

A bar called Drummond's (in Mt Vernon, Texas) began construction on an expansion of their building, hoping to "grow" their business.

In response, the local Southern Baptist Church started a campaign to block the bar from expanding - petitions, prayers, etc. About a week before the bar's grand re-opening, a bolt of lightning struck the bar and burned it to the ground!

Afterward, the church folks were rather smug - bragging about "the power of prayer". The angry bar owner eventually sued the church on grounds that the church ... "was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, through direct actions or indirect means."

Of course, the church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise.

The judge read carefully through the plaintiff's complaint and the defendant's reply. He then opened the hearing by saying:

"I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but it appears from the paperwork that what we have here is a bar owner who now believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does not."
