Double-Decker Bus Accident Victim a Star Varsity Tennis Player at Mira Costa

A 16-year-old boy who died from injuries sustained when his head struck a freeway overpass in El Segundo as he was standing up on the top deck of a double-decker tour bus was the son of a former pro tennis player and a starter on the varsity tennis team at his Manhattan Beach high school, it was reported today.

The boy was identified as Mason Zisette of Manhattan Beach, coroner's Investigator Joseph Cronin said.

Zisette was injured about 7:45 p.m. Friday on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway at the Arbor Vitae Street overcrossing in El Segundo, according to the CHP, which reported the Starline Tours bus was going about 45 mph. He died at 5:23 p.m. Saturday at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, Cronin said.

The son of former tennis pro Matt Zisette, the boy started on the varsity tennis team at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, where he had just finished his sophomore year, according KPCC.

The Zisette family served as the centerpiece for a sales brochure for the Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert two years ago.

Grief counselors and psychologists will be on hand at the school on Monday, Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter told the station.

Gage Stroman, 17, of Manhattan Beach told City News Service he was among a group of people who carried the boy to the bottom deck, where he was treated by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital.

Stroman said he and the injured teen where among a group of South Bay students celebrating another passenger's birthday. He said he was near the boy when the accident occurred, but didn't see what happened.

"I heard a scream and looked up and he was down," Stroman said. "We all ran over to him."
