Strand Brewing to Release Bottled Beer

Brews News: A look at what is happening on the craft beer scene in the South Bay of Los Angeles.

After becoming one of the South Bay's most well known breweries over the past three years, Torrance's Strand Brewing Co. will hit another major milestone next week when it begins distributing its lineup of beers in bottle format.

According to Strand co-founder Rich Marcello, the brewery will release four of its beers in bottle format beginning March 16.

The initial bottle release will include 24th Street Pale Ale, Atticus IPA, Beach House Amber and Second Sleep Imperial Stout. Eventually, Marcello said the brewery will make its full lineup of beers available in bottles.

"It is a milestone," Marcello said. "Somebody is going to be able to come home and have Strand beer in the fridge."

Previously, Strand's beers were only available on tap or in growlers filled at the brewery's tasting room. With the new format, Marcello said he can extend the brewery's reach.

"Growlers are a good thing but growlers have a shelf life that is very short," Marcello said. "I can expand my territory a little bit," he said, adding that bottles do not need to be returned like kegs do.

As for the bottles themselves, Marcello chose a smaller format – 16.9 ounces – over the more traditional 22 ounce large format bottles. Marcello also said that he took some inspiration from the wine world in designed the clean, consistent labels.

"I didn't want it to be too beachy," Marcello said. "The goal is to take something that is a little more for everyone... By being classy, you actually include a lot more people," he added, saying that many breweries use too "cartoonish" labels.

"I don't want to pay $9.99 for a beer with a picture of a clown getting shot in the head," Marcello joked. "I feel like we have done a very good job of protecting our brand from being silly."

To celebrate the bottle releases, Strand will be hosting a celebration at the brewery on Saturday, March 16. A new keg of White Sand Double IPA and a cask of oaked Second Sleep Russian Imperial Stout will be tapped at noon.

Bottles will soon be available in local stores and restaurants and will range in price from $4.50 to $9 per bottle.
