How Long Can I Expect A Shirt To Last?

At Flair Cleaners, we are often asked how long shirts and other garments should last.  Regardless of the style or cost, every shirt wears in a variety of ways that affect its lifetime.  At Flair, we clean thousands of shirts, and know that it’s not the cost or make, but the care that makes a difference.  To minimize damage and maximize the lifetime of a shirt, have it laundered or dry cleaned frequently.

The average shirt lasts about 35–50 cleanings, or two years.  This fluctuates depending on the strain during wear, the fiber content, and construction.  Perspiration and antiperspirants (which contain fabric-damaging aluminum chlorides) will stain and weaken the fabric, regardless of the cleaning process, if left in a shirt for long periods.  Buttons often wear out before shirts.  At Flair, we check every shirt and replace cracked or missing buttons as part of our standard service.
