Skechers Super Bowl Ad Ignites Twitter

Before the ad aired, many greyhound lovers were tweeting negatively about it. Now that it's aired during Super Bowl Sunday, there's a bit of a difference in tweet tone. Many people support the ad; those who don't continue to tweet, too.

Super Bowl Sunday is a big deal, for athletes, fans and advertisers.

In the case of Skechers, a Manhattan Beach-based global footwear giant, its 30-second ad has finally officially aired, prompting the TwitterVerse to once again explode with Tweets, aka comments, about the commercial.

And picketers have been active, too. Just today, on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5, with the big game airing at 3 p.m. on the West Coast, reports of animal advocates picketing Skechers stores hit the Internet. In San Diego, on Saturday, Feb. 4, a Pacific Beach Skechers had picketers outside its doors.

In the same report, PETA was said to be protesting the ad, too. The organization asked people to send a letter to Skechers President Michael Greenberg to protest the ad.

“Greyhound racing is a cruel sport, it exploits the dogs,” said Pam Harris, a protest organizer.

However, word after the big game summed up the uneventful Super Bowl spots: "Too many commercials fell back on tactics that were too familiar from a plethora of Super Bowl spots: anthropomorphic animals, second-class celebrities, slapstick violence and riding the coattails of popular culture. Risk-taking, rule-breaking ideas were as hard to find among the more than 50 commercials as good taste in a GoDaddy ad," according to the New York Times.

NYT's take on the Skechers ad: "And a commercial for Skechers ended with a cameo by Mark Cuban, making a weak joke related to his ownership of the Dallas Mavericks."

Of note, the National Greyhound Association wrote on its website: "Because the Super Bowl is perhaps the most widely watched TV show of the year, and its ads attract incredible attention, it could mean a lot of exposure for the world's greatest canine athlete--who, in addition to their grace and athleticism, happen to also make ideal pets after their retirement from racing."

The association noted: "Skechers has assured those objecting that no animals were placed in any danger or risk during the filming of the commercial..."

Dog racing is not okay. Dogs are pawns for profit. Dogs break their legs, their hocks, are electrocuted. In 2005-2006, 150+ dogs disappeared from Tucson Greyhound Park where the Skechers ad was filmed. Dogs come off the track with injuries, tick disease, worms of all kinds, bladder infections, and E.coli. No dog racing will never be okay.

It is unconscionable that Skechers chose to shoot an ad at this notorious dog track where hundreds of dogs live lives of confinement and suffer injuries on the track.    At Tucson Greyhound Park, greyhounds are kept confined in small cages which are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around.  They are fed raw 4-D meat, the meat of downed, diseased, disabled or dead livestock.  This was documented in a recent video investigation.   While racing, greyhounds face the risk of serious injury. According to state records, between January 2007 and November 2009, nearly 1,000 greyhound injuries were reported at Arizona racetracks. The most common injury was a broken leg, and other reported injuries included fractures, sprains, dislocations, muscle tears and strains, lacerations, a cracked skull, broken backs, heat stroke, puncture wounds and paralysis. THIS AD MAKES PEOPLE THINK THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH GREYHOUND RACING -- WHICH IS NOT THE CASE. BEHIND THE FLASHY TECH AD, A HARSH AND VIOLENT REALITY MAY AWAIT THE LOSERS OF THE RACE. THE TRUTH HURTS. IT IS IN VERY POOR TASTE AND DEFINITELY DOES NOT SET A GOOD EXAMPLE. THIS AD WAS SEEN BY A RECORD AUDIENCE AND DID NOT SEND A POSITIVE MESSAGE.
