World Cancer Day

Today is World Cancer Day—an initiative which aims to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment. As the incidence of cancer is expected to rise significantly in the next 20-40 years, it is more important than ever that people be educated and informed and know where they can find support and resources for this devastating disease.

The Los Angeles South Bay and surrounding communities are fortunate to have a free and complete resource destination in Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach (CSC-RB). CSC-RB is a non-profit organization that has been providing free programs and services to cancer patients and their loved ones in its home-like setting on the Redondo Beach Pier for nearly 27 years. In that time, it has become a complete mental, physical, and spiritual destination for resources to those affected by cancer. In 2012, CSC-RB served nearly 1400 people with over 10,000 visits for its free programs.

CSC-RB provides more than 140 free programs per month of emotional support, education and hope for people with cancer and their families. Services include weekly support groups, drop-in networking groups, Kids Community, Physician’s lectures, stress reduction and mind-body activities, educational lectures and workshops on variety of topics related to cancer including nutrition and cooking. All programs are derived from evidence-based psychosocial oncology and mind-body research. Groups are facilitated by licensed therapists.

Last year CSC-RB expanded into providing free services to children impacted by cancer with a Kids’ Community Program.   In 2014, CSC-RB also began providing free groups for teens to be able to serve the entire family. The program is designed for kids  5-12 years old and teens that have a relative or close friend with cancer.

As we recognize World Cancer Day and its efforts to raise awareness, please keep in mind that there is a place right here in the South Bay community where those impacted by cancer can find the education, resources and support they need—all completely free of charge—so that no one faces cancer alone.
