Busy Morning for Fire Department

The Manhattan Beach Fire Department responds to countless calls every day and participates in a mutual aid coverage program for South Bay cities.

A second alarm fire in a Hermosa Beach commercial building at 1601 Pacific Coast Highway brought a Manhattan Beach fire engine and battalion chief to the scene in its initial phase, according to MBFD Battalion Chief Ken Shuck.

Once the fire was upped from a first-alarm, additional MB units along with Torrance and Redondo Beach units were dispatched to the call.

The fire, in an electrical room on the ground floor, was "knocked down" within 15 minutes. No injuries were reported, said Shuck.

Around the same time, several more calls were dispatched. These involved a fire alarm at the MB Badminton Club, which turned out to be a false alarm, a medical emergency in the 1200 block of Pacific Avenue, a medical emergency at Cedar and Marine avenues, and a medical emergency in the 1500 block of The Strand.
