Car Chase Nets Possible MB Burglars

A wild multi-freeway car chase on Tuesday has prompted MB and Hermosa Beach Police to determine if the arrested individuals have burglarized homes in the two beach cities.

Two people arrested on suspicion of burglary after a televised car chase Tuesday are being investigated as possible suspects in Manhattan Beach burglaries, said MBPD Officer Stephanie Martin Thursday.

Melvin Lane, 30, of Long Beach, and Brittani Collins, 25, of Los Angeles, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and evading arrest after the car chase Tuesday.

MBPD has "not officially determined they were responsible" for burglaries in MB, however, police "have reason to believe the suspects were in the Manhattan Beach area during the times burglaries were committed," Martin said.

Land and Collins are also being investigated by Hermosa Beach Police in connection with a Feb. 20 burglary in the 400 block of Hollowell Avenue around 9 a.m., HBPD Lt. Tom Thompson told Patch Wednesday, as well as other incidents. Thompson said the female suspect told arresting officers Tuesday she'd committed a burglary in Hermosa Beach.

On Tuesday, Lane and Collins led law enforcement officers on a multi-freeway chase that ended with their arrests in South Los Angeles. The two fled from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies when officers attempted to pull their vehicle over in Chino Hills.

LASD Major Crimes Detectives were conducting an investigation when the two two suspects allegedly burglarized a residence in the 2900 block of Olympic View Drive, Chino Hills.

During the pursuit, Lane, oftentimes reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, crashed into two vehicles and did not stop, according to an LASD news release. In the area of Exposition Boulevard and Normandie Avenue, Lane fled from the vehicle and Collins continued driving, leading officers on another short pursuit during which she crashed into a bus and another vehicle.

Collins was taken into custody first; Lane was apprehended with assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department. Property stolen from the Chino Hills residence was found in the suspect's vehicle and identified.
