Impaired driving checkpoints and extra patrols netted more than 100 arrests Friday night, and the traffic enforcement campaign was set to continue Saturday night.
From 12:01 a.m. Friday through midnight, 143 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to Wendy Brewer of the Glendora Police Department.
The arrests, down from 164 DUI arrests during the same time period last year, included one for gross vehicular manslaughter and four crashes causing injury, Brewer said.
The Summer/Labor Day Avoid DUI campaign will continue with extra patrols and checkpoints in multiple cities, officials said.
There will be checkpoints in Burbank, El Monte, Huntington Park, Manhattan Beach, South Los Angeles, Paramount and in the Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill and Northeast areas. There will be extra patrols throughout Los Angeles County, including El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Pomona, Vernon, West Los Angeles and Newhall.
Authorities encourage all motorists to report drunk drivers by calling 911.
