Hermosa Beach Motorcyclist Injured in Collision Dies

A Hermosa Beach man has died nearly two months after being injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a Mercedes-Benz SUV on Nov. 1.

Michael Cameron King, 62, had remained unconscious and was most recently being treated in the sub-acute care unit at Memorial Hospital of Gardena where he had been since right after Thanksgiving, according to his friend Trish Noel.

"He did not speak, but many of us felt that he could hear us," said Noel.

King died at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday after apparently suffering a heart attack from which he could not be revived, Noel said.

“It’s still quite a shock,” Noel said.

The collision happened as King was heading north on Sepulveda Boulevard. The driver of the Mercedes, which was heading south on Sepulveda, turned left in front of the bike, with the motorcycle broadsiding the Mercedes, said Manhattan Beach Police Sergeant Mark Mason. King was on his 2001 Harley-Davidson Dyna Wide Glide.

“I still didn’t expect that he would die,” Noel said. “He didn’t have any heart issues that we were aware of.”

After learning of his collision, she and other friends had stepped in to help, making sure King received the medical care he needed. They also were managing his affairs since he had no living relatives that they know of, Noel said.

King’s mother and stepfather both died earlier this fall in North Carolina, Noel said.  

"He just lost his mother two months before the accident, and his stepfather the following month," Noel said. "That was really hard for him."

King had lived in Hermosa Beach for about five years, according to Noel.

No funeral arrangements have been made yet.
