The 16-year-old was knocked off the top level when the bus drove under an overpass.

A 16-year-old boy from Manhattan Beach was critically injured when he stood up on the top deck of a double-decker tour bus as it was about to pass under an overpass in El Segundo, authorities said today.

The youth was found by a California Highway Patrol officer lying on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes of the San Diego (405) Freeway north of El Segundo Boulevard, near the tour bus and another stationary vehicle, California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi said.

NBC4 reported that the Starline Tours bus was travelling around 45 mph as it approached the Arbor Vitae Street overpass, the youth stood and was struck by the overpass.

The accident was reported at 7:47 p.m. Thursday, Polizzi said.

CBS News reported the boy was among a 40-person party which chartered the bus. While Starline does not take its buses on freeways during tourist treks, the vehicles can and do traverse freeways when chartered.
