Firefighters Cook To Help Others

A $5 spaghetti meal serves up food and camaraderie. Kids arrive in their firefighting gear to check out the fire trucks and equipment, then venture to Skechers Snow Park before the fireworks gala.

A 'home-cooked" spaghetti meal filled the tummies of hundreds who enjoyed the Manhattan Beach Fire Department's annual fundraising cookfest Sunday, held before the start of the well-known fireworks extravaganza that takes over the streets and sky in downtown MB every year.

Firefighters and a volunteer crew of servers prepared, cooked, served, bussed tables and washed dishes for anyone who paid $5 to dine on spaghetti, bread, salad and beverages. In the crowd were youngsters clad in their own fire uniforms and eager to see the row of fire trucks, fire hats and equipment on display in Fire Station No. 1. Dining with fire department heroes was indeed a not-to-be-missed opportunity. Youngsters received Jr. Fire Department badges, as did anyone who wanted one.

The dinner was prepared by fire department personnel, aided by volunteers from Manhattan Beach CERTA and other organizations.

Sketchers Snow Park, where snow and sledding was available for all for free, added to the afternoon fun, as did a visit from Santa who made an appearance with his reindeer. The John Brown band engaged the crowd in a sing-along and folks sang Christmas carols, among other tunes.

Check out the evening's big event, the beautiful holiday fireworks, a celebration that also launched the city's 2012 centennial. Photos coming at 5 p.m.
