MB Police on Alert for Drunk Drivers

Additionally, the South Bay Regional D.U.I. Task Force has 12-14 two-man cars out tonight.

Armed with knowledge of Cinco de Mayo "hot spots,"  the South Bay Regional Task Force is adding to the Manhattan Beach police department's efforts to remove drunk drivers from the road tonight. Not that there's a problem in Manhattan Beach, said Andy Harrod, MB police captain.

Harrod told Manhattan Beach Patch that cities such as Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Hawthorne tend to have more trouble with drunk drivers than does Manhattan Beach.

"Mostly in Manhattan Beach, we're very fortunate right now," said Harrod. "We don't have a lot of hot spots, trouble spots, that we have to focus on. Luckily, through some of our due diligence and working with the bar owners and the restaurants that serve alcohol, we've worked through some of those problems."

The South Bay D.U.I. Task Force will have 12-14 two-man cars, supervisors included, patrolling the South Bay, including in and out of Manhattan Beach's north and downtown areas, said Harrod.

"Certainly, we're going to have our swing shift and graveyard officers very vigilant out there on the streets as well, looking for DUI drivers," said Harrod. "So we are going to have a number of officers on the street focusing on removing drunk drivers from our highway, if they locate one, to make it safe for all of us, our family members, our loved ones, so that they can travel and drive home without having to worry about being involved with a drunk driver, whether it's a traffic accident or seeing someone weave on the road."

If you see someone driving whom you thin might be intoxicated, Harrod says you should call 9-1-1, even if calling from a cell phone.
